Armando and Minda Magundayao immigrated to America in the early 1970s, and in time achieved their dreams: Minda became a medical doctor and helped Armando to open the first Wedge Recovery Center in 1994. Over the past 20 years, they have built a network of Wedge Recovery Centers to treat mental health and substance abuse issues that now employs 200 people and has multiple locations. Three of the offices provide drug and alcohol treatment in Philadelphia: North Broad Street, Frankford Avenue and South Broad Street. Wedge Recovery Centers’ counselors use multiple modalities in the outpatient treatment of addiction and co-occurring disorders, but not to the exclusion of the 12-step model, which they wholeheartedly endorse.

Treatment and Staff

There is no inpatient program at The Wedge Recovery Centers, but for substance abuse treatment, there are still two levels of care: Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and regular outpatient.

Whether a client is applicable for the IOP or standard outpatient is determined by the results of a biopsychosocial evaluation conducted as part of the admissions process. Clients assigned to IOP attend three group sessions a week and have one individual session with a counselor per week. Those in standard outpatient come to group twice a week, and have one individual session a month.

With morning (10am to 1 pm), afternoon (1:30 to 4:45 pm) and evening (5:30 to 8:45 pm)  groups, clients can organize their therapy schedule to fit in with their daily lives. Those with co-occurring disorders can meet with a psychiatrist; if prescribed any medication, The Wedge Recovery Centers assists in medication management. Counselors encourage their clients to work a 12-step recovery program and the 12-step method is discussed in groups. Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT techniques are used in groups and in one-on-one sessions.

The Wedge Recovery Centers’ clinical staff includes psychiatrists, Master’s-level therapists, counselors and their assistants, and recovery workers with varying levels of degrees. Each client also works with a case manager and certified peer specialists.

Extras

The Wedge Recovery Centers is invested in its community—the goal being to help shape public policy and reduce the stigma of addiction. In September 2013, they helped to recruit a team of 400 walkers for the Pennsylvania Recovery Organization—Achieving Community Together walk in support of National Recovery month. They also sponsor a community cleanup program and a neighborhood garden. Their Facebook page shows marches for social justice, a members picnic and a slam poetry reading—The Wedge Recovery Centers website even solicits creative writing for their Poetry in Motion page.

Uninsured clients can apply for the Behavioral Health Special Initiative, a Philadelphia program that provides treatment coverage for 21 days.

In Summary

The Wedge Recovery Centers provides an affordable, traditional, and 12-step oriented program for individuals who need structure to their recovery, but not to the extent of an inpatient facility. With groups not divided by age or gender, there is some diversity among group members, although clients tend to be local. There is no formal alumni program, but potential clients can take a look at testimonials of successful recovery from graduates of The Wedge Recovery Centers on YouTube.
