Waypoint Recovery Center Review
With locations in North Charleston and Cameron, South Carolina, Waypoint Recovery Center is a Joint Commission-accredited drug and alcohol rehab that offers flexible care plans for clients struggling with substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders. Though the specifics of therapy may vary, all treatment plans typically draw on both holistic and strength-based perspectives. While those seeking less intensive care can attend outpatient therapy in North Charleston, the organization also offers residential treatment for adult men and women in Cameron.
Accommodations and Food
The Cameron facility is a sprawling residential home set on 58 acres of grassy and secluded land featuring plenty of forest as well as a small lake. The home offers a total of 35 beds for clients in shared rooms with rustic decorations throughout. All bedrooms are spacious and include two full beds, dressers, nightstands, lamps, wood floors and plenty of natural light. All residents are housed separately by gender. In addition to the sleeping quarters, the facility also includes several spacious therapy and meeting rooms with comfortable seating, an exercise room with treadmills and weights, common areas with cable TV and WiFi and a fully-equipped kitchen. Throughout their stay, all residents are served three healthy meals a day plus snacks.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all participants go through an initial intake, which includes a clinical assessment and a biopsychosocial screening. While the program does not include medical detox, those in need of these services can get referrals to nearby resources as needed. Still, the facility does provide Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) services in some cases for clients with severe withdrawal symptoms (typically using buprenorphine).
Once accepted into treatment, residents attend full days of structured treatment. They can expect individual and group therapy based around evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT. Groups cover many different topics including psychoeducation, sober living skills, emotional processing, life skills, mindfulness training, trigger identification and relapse prevention. All clients are also required to attend on-site 12-step meetings as well (though other peer support meetings like Celebrate Recovery are also an option). As mentioned, dual diagnosis support and medication management are also available for issues such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. Self-referred and court-ordered clients are both welcome to attend, provided they are 18 or older.
The staff at Waypoint Recovery Center includes a supervising MD, RNs, CACs, LPCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians and counselors.
Extras
As part of the program’s holistic approach, residents also participate in recreational therapy, which can include art therapy, journalling and meditation. The facility’s grounds also offer plenty of winding walking paths, which clients can use to relax and unwind. Some of the program’s staff members are also credentialed specialists in various process addictions such as sex and gambling and can use that expertise in individual therapy.
As mentioned, those seeking more flexible care can also attend outpatient therapy nearby. There’s also a continuing care and recovery management track offered, which is a step-down form of outpatient care typically used as an aftercare plan. Finally, those who complete primary care can also attend free weekly alumni meetings at the facility to begin building their own network of sober friends and colleagues.

In all, Waypoint Recovery Center is a well-rounded residential program with a multi-disciplinary approach to recovery. Treatment plans are individualized and include evidence-based care, 12-step integration, holistic support and medical oversight as well. Basic dual diagnosis care is also provided. While those in need of a more intensive medical program may need to seek additional care, Waypoint Recovery Center’s residential program remains a balanced option worth considering for those in the area.
