Waypoint Recovery Center Outpatient Review

With facilities in Cameron and North Charleston, South Carolina, Waypoint Recovery Center is a Joint Commission-accredited alcohol and drug treatment facility with additional support for clients with co-occurring disorders. All treatment plans are individualized, approaching recovery from holistic and strength-based perspectives. In addition to the organization’s more intensive residential treatment program in Cameron, those seeking flexible care can also attend outpatient treatment in North Charleston.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, everyone undergoes an initial intake process, which includes a clinical assessment and biopsychosocial screening. Though full-service medical detox services are not available, the organization does offer Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid dependence when necessary (typically using buprenorphine). Though each program schedule may vary, IOP typically meets several times a week for three hours per session.

Once stabilized, IOP clients begin attending both individual and group counseling with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT. To attend outpatient care, all participants are also required to invite their family to a Multiple Family Group Therapy (MFGT) component of the program as well. Groups cover many different topics including mindfulness training, emotional processing, life skills, trigger identification, relapse prevention and social skills. Twelve-step teachings are also worked into the curriculum, with clients strongly encouraged to attend off-site peer support meetings such as AA/NA or Celebrate Recovery. As mentioned, dual diagnosis support for issues like trauma, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety are available along with medication management services. Both self-referred and court-ordered clients ages 18 and up are welcome to attend.

The staff at Waypoint Recovery Center consists of RNs, LPCs, CACs, a supervising MD and additional Master’s-level counselors.

Extras

Programs can sometimes also include recreational therapy in the form of journaling, art therapy or meditation. Beyond treating drug addiction, some of Waypoint’s staff members are credentialed specialists in treating process addictions like sex and gambling addiction as well and can bring that experience to bear in individual therapy.

As mentioned, a more intensive residential treatment option is also available as well as a continuing care and recovery management track. The latter is often used as a step-down, aftercare option for those who have completed a primary care plan. Finally, the organization also hosts free weekly alumni meetings to help clients begin to build their own sober communities and networks.

In Summary

In all, Waypoint Recovery Center’s outpatient plans provide all the necessary ingredients for a moderate-intensity recovery program. All treatment plans are individualized and include group, family and individual therapy with evidence-based practices, dual diagnosis support and medical oversight. Though on-site detox is not offered, MAT sessions are available to ease severe withdrawal symptoms whenever necessary. Though clients seeking comprehensive psychiatric and medical supervision may want to seek additional help, Waypoint Recovery Center’s outpatient program is a strong, well-rounded option for those in the area.
