Wausau WisconsinThe Basics

Founded in 2003, Wausau Comprehensive Treatment Center provides Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts. WCTC offers treatment plans using Methadone, Suboxone or Subutex and is located in the city of Wausau in Central Wisconsin, near the Wisconsin River.

Those suffering from addiction to alcohol and non-opioid drugs can attend its group and individual therapy through the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), but the vast majority of clients receive outpatient treatment for opioid addiction.

Treatment and Staff

After clients are assessed, they work with WCTC’s treatment team to decide which course of MAT best suits their recovery needs. For their first 90 days of treatment, clients must come to the clinic each day for their dosage. After 90 days of clean drug tests, they may apply to take home two doses every other day.

Clients attend a weekly psycho-education class for 12 weeks and have at least one monthly meeting with a psychiatrist to monitor their progress. The class addresses the disease model of addiction, coping skills and handling triggers.

In addition to the 12-week class, clients are strongly encouraged to attend group therapy as well. WCTC has up to 12 processing groups running at once, and clients can attend several each week. Groups use CBT and Seeking Safety and are led by CSAC addiction counselors, many dually-certified as Master’s-level therapists. Clients can also schedule regular individual sessions with their primary counselor.

The treatment team at WCTC addresses co-occurring disorders in both groups and one-on-one sessions, and they employ a mental health consultant to review treatment plans. If they see that a client’s mental health diagnosis is escalating, referrals are given to a mental health clinic or hospital for more specialized or intensive therapy and medication.

WCTC hopes that all of its clients eventually have no need for MAT and to this end, works with them to create a treatment plan that leads to tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line. The treatment team also suggests that clients attend 12-step or other peer support meetings in the community while attending treatment.

Extras

After clients have completed MAT, they’re encouraged to schedule check-in or regular sessions with their primary counselor for aftercare.
