The Basics
Named after the Swahili work for “freedom,” Watts Health’s House of Uhuru provides residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment services in Watts, a historical and culturally-diverse neighborhood of South Los Angeles, California. Watts Health was established in 2002 and offers primary care medical services as well as substance abuse treatment. Its outpatient program lasts six months and works with clients who have recently completed residential programs and those requiring a less intensive level of treatment at the outpatient level.
Treatment and Staff
Throughout their six-month treatment plan, clients attend group therapy and psycho-education classes three times a week. Groups are held Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 pm and are led by addiction counselors with CADC credentials.
Groups teach the disease model of addiction and CBT skills to aid in relapse prevention. Clients can also receive therapy as-needed from the treatment team made up of MFTs and MSWs. Clients in need of on-going dual diagnosis support are referred to a nearby mental health clinic for additional therapy and medication management.
Throughout treatment, clients are subjected to random drug screens. They are also required to attend 12-step meetings, the frequency of which is determined by their primary counselor.
Extras
Watts Health also offers comprehensive medical services including HIV/AIDS support, physical therapy and vision and dental care. It also operates the Jordan and Locke Wellness Centers, which provide healthcare and education to school-aged children and their families.

Watts Health’s House of Uhuru outpatient program provides long-term treatment in south Los Angeles. By requiring clients to attend six months of group sessions three times each week as well as local 12-step meetings, clients emerge from treatment not only with improved coping skills, but also a community of recovery-oriented peers for on-going support.
