Waterfront Rescue Mission Review
Based out of Pensacola, Florida, Waterfront Rescue Mission is an expansive organization that provides emergency shelter services and residential treatment programs to homeless men. It provides extended lengths of stay and two phases of care, both of which are based on Christian teachings and 12-step philosophies.
Accommodations and Food
Waterfront Rescue Mission can accommodate up to 224 men in large group rooms with bunk beds. While fairly basic, the facility it also features shared living areas, on-site laundry, a large cafeteria and a chapel. Throughout their stay, residents receive three meals a day.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients must get a physical and undergo an initial assessment, including a psychiatric evaluation if necessary. These services are available by referral at nearby community clinics and organizations. The program itself consists of two phases—the first of which is based on learning the Bible, attending individual and group therapy and attending work therapy, which generally means helping out around the mission. Groups cover a range of topics including the foundations of Christianity, the life of Jesus, practical faith and several weeks of intensive anger management.
In the second phase, residents add increased one-on-one time with chaplains as well as GED classes and other necessary social skills; including relapse prevention, personal boundaries and relationship classes. Because the organization primarily stresses 12-step and Christian recovery, those seeking dual diagnosis support or evidence-based practices may need to seek outside help.
The staff at Waterfront Rescue Mission consists of volunteers and a chaplain core consisting of state-certified drug and alcohol counselors and life coaches. Many of the staff members are in recovery themselves.
Extras
In addition to the above, the organization also has a Day Resource Center on-site that includes a library and offers clients a place to relax. Because the organization has strong relationships with nearby treatment facilities and community organizations, clients can also get referrals for any additional services they may need, including detox. Waterfront Rescue Mission is also affiliated with the Mobile Rescue Mission in Mobile, Alabama, which offers many of the same services.

Overall, Waterfront Rescue Mission provides a safe and structured environment for men who have nowhere else to go. Treatment is heavy on the 12 steps and teaches clients the necessary life skills to hold down a job, develop healthy relationships and find housing. While it is somewhat of a niche option, Waterfront Rescue Mission remains a valuable resource for those who qualify.
