The Basics
Located in the Dallas suburb of Richardson, Texas, Waterford Academy is an outpatient drug and alcohol treatment program for adolescents. It offers flexible and individualized treatment for clients ages 13 to 18. Options include a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) with on-site secondary schooling and an evening Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for clients who have returned to their regular schedule. There is also a specialized track called Failure to Launch, which is designed for young adults to build life skills.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial assessment, clients whose primary issue is substance abuse enroll in either the PHP, an intensive track that combines alternative schooling and drug and alcohol treatment or the IOP, which is more flexible and doesn’t include schooling.
The PHP is five days a week from 8 am to 4 pm and includes exercise, on-site NA meetings, individual and group therapy. The IOP is three nights a week from 5 to 8 pm and includes group and individual programs, relapse prevention and art therapy. Both programs employ evidence-based practices such as CBT, as well as psychodrama and holistic approaches like equine therapy and dance.
The staff consists primarily of MFTs and Master’s-level counselors.
Extras
The Failure to Launch program is designed to help young adults who are overwhelmed by adulthood and provide them with tools to create a productive life. This program focuses on developing life skills than providing therapy and treats issues like procrastination, passive aggressive behavior, entitlement, indecisiveness and lack of commitment to school or work.
Waterford also offers a summer credit recovery program for kids whose drug use has caused them to fall behind in school. It includes five hours of school, Monday through Friday, and three hours of treatment on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Waterford in in the process of developing treatment programs for clients ages 18 to 21.

Waterford Academy is an innovative outpatient facility that helps young people address substance abuse while also keeping up with their school work. While residential treatment may be necessary for some, Waterford Academy is a great outpatient option for teens in the Dallas area.
