TTP Communities Limited is a network of 25 facilities throughout England, providing inpatient detox and residential rehabilitation to those suffering from alcohol and drug addiction. Founded in February 2006, its recovery communities operate from the perception that offering choices of services, treatments and accommodation options is essential to help as many people as possible achieve long-term sobriety. To that end, the centers offer a range of evidence-based treatment options in detox, residential rehab and outpatient programs. Walter Lyon House is the primary residential facility in Lancaster.
Accommodations and Food
Walter Lyon House, in the northwest of England. Set in a historic Edwardian home on two acres of landscaped gardens, the building has been extended and refurbished with modern fittings. Twenty newly furnished private bedrooms house residents; bathrooms, kitchens and laundry facilities are shared. The atmosphere combines professional workspace with places to relax and reflect.
Part of the treatment model is for the residents to become involved with their care and surroundings. Shared living, including cooking and maintenance, is a critical part of that practice. Residents plan and prepare their own meals as well as doing their own laundry and other chores.
Treatment and Staff
Clients who start in the Kingston Inpatient Detox Clinic can be comforted by the fact that five specialist doctors and a team of high-level nurses are supported by qualified healthcare assistants. Treatment may last up to 14 days for alcohol detox and 22 days for drug detox, which is followed by referral to one of TTP’s residential rehab centers.
Clients coming into Walter Lyon House must be abstinent before they arrive. A personal care plan is developed to address three key aspects of the rehab journey: Continued personal recovery through group and individual therapy and workshop-specific discussions on future goals for health, finances, work, housing and family relationships. There’s also 12-week training followed by placement to become a qualified peer mentor in a program nationally credited by the Open College Network.
The Recovery Academy is a blend of proven, evidence-based interventions based on the principle that the client is not a bad person trying to become a good but someone whose personal resources have made them a survivor of a very dangerous condition. Clients, in consultation with health professionals, are able to choose the philosophy that best matches their belief system: Therapeutic Community, CBT, or 12-step programs. A positive, holistic approach nurtures body, mind and spirit. The staff works with residents to devise a plan, based on individual strengths, to create strong and realistic goals for the future.
The culture and atmosphere of the Academy reflects real world environments—a workplace where punctuality, personal responsibility, “smartness” and reliability are promoted and expected. Process groups, social activities (drama, music, and art), house meetings, workshops, guest lecturers and the Peer-Mentoring Course comprise the daily schedule. Many residents of the Academy have the opportunity to volunteer in training placements with other TTP facilities.
Staff members are trained specifically for work in the Recovery Academy utilizing therapeutic community methodology. The center manager, counselors, recovery coaches, peer counselors and support staff share the responsibility of running Walter Lyon House.
