inexpensive rehab garrison new yorkWalter Hoving Home Review

Walter Hoving Home is a non-profit behavioral health organization that provides residential treatment for substance abuse to women aged 18 and older. Founded in Garrison, New York in 1967, it opened its second location in Pasadena, California in 1984 and most recently in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2006. All facilities offer the same level of gender-specific care allowing clients to stay for six months to a year, with additional re-entry phases that can last up to a year. All treatment centers around Christianity as a path to recovery.

Accommodations and Food

Walter Hoving Home has a network of three facilities—the largest being the Garrison location which is just 45 miles north of New York City. Situated on 39 acres of land, the tutor-style home can accommodate up to 75 women. It comes equipped with workspaces, living rooms and shared bedrooms—each of which has two to four bunk beds, dressers and shared closet space.

The Pasadena location (a 50-bed hotel-like facility) and the ranch-style home in Las Vegas (which has 10 beds), are set up similarly, with communal computer-equipped workspaces, areas for quiet worship and living rooms with cable TV. All residents are expected to help cook meals as part of a rotating schedule of chores.

Treatment and Staff

Upon intake, residents are assigned a room and a “big sister,” namely a more experienced client who helps them get adjusted in the first two weeks of treatment. Programs are highly structured and regimented and focus on forming a closer relationship with God.

During the first three months, residents are expected to learn the rules of the house, take part in chores and begin to learn the foundations of Christianity. This phase includes a weekly trip to the Chapel as well as Bible studies and quiet devotion time. Clients are also expected to follow a 12-step program after which they receive a certificate of completion and continue on to the next three-month phase.

The second phase of treatment involves increased responsibilities and freedom, such as taking care of newer clients or going into the community to offer experience, strength and hope. This phase focuses on building life skills—such as GED preparation and computer classes. In all phases of treatment, residents are expected to wake up early and participate in daily group and individual therapy.

There are seven peer counselor staff members in New York and Pasadena and three in Las Vegas. Though all staff serve as spiritual counselors and house managers, the residents participate extensively in the daily operations of each home.

Extras

Once residents have completed the initial six-month phase of treatment, they can choose to continue living at the homes for an additional six months to a year while working or pursuing their education. At this stage, the facilities serve as sober living or transitional homes rather than residential programs.

Parenting and anger management classes are also available.

In Summary

Overall, Walter Hoving Home is a well-respected residential program for women. With three locations, its caring staff and Christian-based treatment has helped countless women develop a more hopeful state of mind. While spiritual guidance over evidence-based practices may not be a good fit for everyone, the program’s incorporation of Christian values and traditional 12-step philosophies are well-suited for those seeking treatment that focuses on spiritual recovery. Combining the safety of gender-specific peer support, structured treatment, life skills building and long-term treatment has make Walter Hoving Home a solid choice for women for over 40 years.
