Walden Eating Disorders Review
Established in 2003, Walden Eating Disorders Treatment in Waltham, Massachusetts, offers a continuum of care for eating disorder treatment that includes inpatient and outpatient programs across New England and also in Georgia. Walden’s inpatient offerings include the main location in Waltham and a unit at Rockville Hospital in Vernon, Connecticut, which was Connecticut’s first dedicated inpatient eating disorder treatment center. There are a total of eight Walden outpatient clinics in Connecticut and Massachusetts and three in Georgia.
Accommodations and Food
Inpatient clients at both locations stay in apartment-style accommodations with living quarters separated for adolescents, men and women. Residents share apartments and have their own private bedrooms, which include twin beds, dressers, modern decor and closet space. Other amenities include on-site laundry services and shared living areas with cable TV.
Treatment takes place in a clinical setting, which is equipped with therapy rooms and an industrial kitchen where all residents are served three meals a day plus snacks. While on-site chefs and dietitians prepare meals, clients gradually take more responsibility for their own food preparation as the program progresses. Support for vegetarianism is available though not for veganism.
Treatment and Staff
Upon intake, clients go through an initial assessment to help staff members develop their individualized treatment plans. Inpatient care generally lasts two to four weeks. In general, the treatment schedule for adults runs from 6 am to 11 pm with breaks throughout the day. The adolescent clients have treatment from 6 am to 10 pm.
Programs include individual therapy three times a week and group therapy daily, both using evidence-based practices such as CBT and DBT. There is a special effort to provide gender-specific care for men too. Groups cover a range of topics including psychoeducation, spirituality, social and communication skills, nutrition, relapse prevention and dual diagnosis issues as necessary. All programs include a trauma-informed care approach as well.
The staff at all Walden Eating Disorders Treatment locations consists of MDs, LMFTs, RDs, RNs, psychiatrists, psychologists and additional Master’s and PhD-level counselors.
Extras
Residents also have the opportunity to participate in practice meals out in restaurants and other group settings. Additionally, they can participate in a range of holistic therapies like yoga, dance, somatic experiencing, creative writing, voice and acting lessons and art therapy.
Those who complete a primary care program may also step down to outpatient treatment at one of the other Walden Eating Disorders Treatment locations for further support.
