Winston-Salem North CarolinaThe Basics

Wake Forest Baptist Health is a large academic medical facility located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Its Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine has operated an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse for the last 18 years that is especially notable for its effective long-term aftercare program.

Wake Forest’s treatment plans incorporate the 12-step framework as well as extensive evidence-based treatment. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) using Suboxone is also available for opioid addicts.

Treatment and Staff

Wake Forest’s IOP is five weeks long, during which time clients attend 20 evenings of group therapy. Staff use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) in groups that address the disease model of addiction, handling triggers, relationship skills and relapse prevention. There is a women’s group available, as well. Clients in need of individual therapy or dual diagnosis support are referred to outside therapists who often work with Wake Forest IOP clients.

The treatment team at Wake Forest includes physicians, LPCs and LCASs. Wake Forest requires clients to use the 12-step framework while in the IOP and they must attend at least three AA/NA meetings each week in addition to groups. They’re also encouraged to find a sponsor and to incorporate 12-step meetings into their aftercare plan.

Opioid addicts can participate in a separate outpatient treatment track. They can receive their Suboxone prescriptions from a Wake Forest physician and are then required to attend one hour of group therapy at least once a week in addition to an outside NA meeting. After one year in the program, clients are encouraged to work with their counselor to create a tapering plan.

Extras

For aftercare, clients are encouraged to drop in to IOP therapy groups at any time to both receive support and to share their experience, strength and hope with current clients. This creates a community in which clients at different stages of recovery can inspire and support each other under the guidance of Wake Forest’s experienced treatment team.

Families of clients are invited to attend group sessions on Monday nights. Wake Forest’s Behavioral Medicine department has a well-regarded Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) program and makes geriatric house calls for seniors unable to travel to the center. The IOP is currently developing a case management program to help clients access wrap-around services for additional support.

In Summary

Wake Forest Baptist Health’s IOP and Suboxone outpatient programs offer clients group therapy and peer support as well as a long-term supportive aftercare community to which they have life-time access. As an educational medical center, Wake Forest is committed to evolving its programs to meet the changing needs of its clients and is currently developing case-management programming to help clients create more stable and productive lives in recovery.
