Pittsburgh PennsylvaniaWaddington Rehab Center Review

Waddington Rehab Center started in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in May of 2016. Founded by Dr. Arif M Rafi MD, a pain management specialist who is dedicated to treating pain  without adding to the prescription addiction epidemic. Dr. Rafi was already running the Therapeutic Interventional Pain Center, where he offers alternatives to narcotics such as epidural steroids, nerve blocks, radiofrequency nerve ablations and spinal cord stimulants. He decided he could help more people by establishing an inpatient Rehab Center and using his existing practice for outpatient rehab and follow ups. Waddington is an inpatient treatment facility that offers a 12-step based program for adult men and women. Treatment is comprised of group and individual therapy utilizing evidence based approaches, and medication management services.

Accommodations and Food

The Waddington building is a former assisted-living home that provides 20 beds for men and women, who sleep in different sections of the facility. All rooms are singles that are furnished with a full bed, sink, small closet, dresser and bathroom that connects between every two rooms. This facility also accommodates clients who come to the program with small children. The residence has a rec room with pool table, lounge chairs and books or magazines to peruse between treatment sessions. There are also offices and meeting areas, and a chapel with beautiful stained glass windows where clients can go for private prayer or weekly services.

The group dining room has round tables and chairs, and is adjacent to a large, industrial kitchen where a kitchen staff prepares meals on a daily basis. The three daily meals are often accompanied with a salad bar or fruit options. There are also coffee, tea and soft drinks available at most hours.

Treatment and Staff

The program offers structured treatment that is based on proven scientific findings and education. Every client has an individualized treatment plan put in place at the beginning of treatment. To begin with, all clients have to be free of drugs or alcohol at the start of treatment, and if detox is required they are able to refer the client to an appropriate facility until they can be admitted. This facility is also not able to offer new prescriptions for psychiatric medication, however they are able to manage existing medications that have already been prescribed.

Typically the programs are designed to last for 28 to 30 days, however there may be certain circumstances that allow some clients to stay longer—up to six months. If a client does stay on for a longer period of time, this stage encourages the clients to begin the transition back to their communities, and they are encouraged to either find or return to work or school while living at the facility. In order to help these clients obtain these skills, the facility offers tools like connecting to a self help support community, like AA or NA, which is also offered on-site daily.

There are several groups each day that focus on understanding addiction as a disease, developing relapse prevention techniques, coping skills, anger management and identifying possible relapse triggers. Weekly individual therapy sessions employ CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) modalities.

Aside from Dr. Rafi, the staff of Waddington is comprised of CADCs, RNs and medical support staff.

Extras

There is an on site gym area on the bottom floor of the facility that offers a Nautilus machine and free weights, and clients are also welcome to partake in outdoor recreational activities and exercise.

This facility considers addiction to be a family disease, and offers a family program every Sunday during visitations that includes group therapy sessions. There is also a family intensive two-day program for loved ones that are offered monthly.

In Summary

The treatment at Waddington aims to address the client as a person and not just a disease. It offers a variety of treatment approaches and tools, including referrals to outpatient programs, so clients can feel secure while venturing out into the world in their newfound sobriety. Based on Dr. Rafi’s expertise, this is an excellent choice from our rehab center reviews for those with pain management issues that play a part in their addiction.
