Volunteers of America UtahThe Basics

Headquartered in the state capital of Salt Lake City, Volunteers of America Utah is a subsidiary of the nationwide non-profit Volunteers of America, an organization that provides behavioral health services to veterans and low-income clientele. The addiction treatment division, named the Cornerstone Counseling Center, was founded in 1968. In addition to its short-term residential detox program, the organization provides flexible outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, clients go through an intake and assessment process with case managers to help develop a plan that suit their needs. While the organization does not provide a medical detox option, there is a 65-bed social detox program, which clients can participate in before continuing on to therapy—still, those who might face life-threatening withdrawal symptoms should seek medical support elsewhere.

Treatment plans are available in Day Treatment, IOP and outpatient intensities which provides 20, nine to 19 and eight hours or less of treatment per week, respectively. Though mostly reliant on group sessions, clients also attend weekly individual therapy. Therapy is evidence-based, with a strong emphasis on CBT and DBT. Support for co-occurring disorders is available as well, including medication management. Groups cover a number of topics including gender-specific issues, parenting, relationship skills, trauma processing, skill-focused psychoeducation, communication techniques, relapse prevention and 12-step recovery principles.

The staff at Volunteers of America Utah consists of LCSWs, LCPCs, LMHCs, case managers, RNs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Volunteers of America Utah also offers outpatient plans solely for mental health issues. Adolescent-specific drug and alcohol treatment is available as well. Counseling for domestic violence issues is provided when necessary as are on-site childcare services between 10:30 am and 6:30 pm. Those who finish primary care can work with staff members to develop stepped down aftercare plans as well.

In Summary

Overall, Volunteers of America Utah is a comprehensive program that offers low-income clients a full continuum of outpatient-based treatment options. Each plan includes evidence-based care, dual diagnosis support, 12-step integration and case management. For men, women and adolescents seeking affordable treatment in a formalized setting, Volunteers of America Utah is a strong resource.
