Volunteers of America Texas  Review

With locations throughout the state, Volunteers of America Texas is a community-oriented facility offering flexible and affordable treatment for clients struggling with addiction. The organization is a subsidiary of the national Volunteers of America. In addition to its outpatient treatment options, the facility also offers residential treatment in San Antonio for women with children.

Accommodations and Food

All told, the residential program can host between 30 and 32 people. Women stay in dorm-style bedrooms with two to three clients to a room. The residence also has common living areas with cable TV, on-site laundry and on-site daycare services. As the organization is located in the country, there are also wooded walking trails residents can explore at their leisure. Finally, the program also has a commercial kitchen where clients are served three meals a day.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members develop treatment plans. Though detox is not available on-site, those in need can get referrals to nearby programs. Once stabilized, all participants go through structured days which include individual and group therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). Groups cover a diverse range of topics including emotional processing, trauma-informed care, parenting skills, relapse prevention and financial literacy. Treatment programs also rely on 12-step recovery principles but dual diagnosis support is not available.

The staff at Volunteers of America Texas consists of MSWs, LCSWs, LCDCs, RNs, case managers and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Residents can have family visitation on the weekends which sometimes includes family therapy as well. The facility is also located on a bus route which can take clients into the city. Other than the treatment methods mentioned above, special classes covering Zumba or arts and crafts are sometimes provided as well.

In Summary

Volunteers of America Texas’ residential division is a well-rounded program for mothers with children. Treatment is evidence-based and includes 12-step support in addition to a range of skill-based group sessions. For those in the area seeking a flexible and affordable treatment option, Volunteers of America Texas Residential is worth considering.
