Volunteers of America Northern Rockies: The Gathering Place Review

Based out of Sheridan, Wyoming, Volunteers of America Northern Rockies is a broad non-profit founded in 1985. It provides flexible behavioral health programs for clients struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. In addition to its various community outreach and veterans resources, the organization also offers residential treatment for women at The Gathering Place.

Accommodations and Food

The Gathering Place is located on a 40-acre campus in the countryside south of Sheridan. The home has a total of 34 beds available in predominantly double rooms—single rooms are sometimes available depending on occupancy. Each bedroom comes with twin-sized beds, wardrobes, dressers and small desks. The house also includes common areas with cable TV, therapy rooms and a fully-equipped kitchen. During their stay, all residents receive three healthy meals a day.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, clients go through an initial intake and assessment to help staff develop their treatment plans. While medical detox is not available, those in need can attend the organization’s Center of Hope facility which provides a short-term social detox for those with less severe addictions. Once stabilized, clients can expect treatment consisting of group and weekly individual therapy rooted in evidence-based practices including CBT, Acceptance-Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI). The curriculum includes teachings from a range of disciplines including strength-based counseling, Seeking Safety, 12-step teachings and more. Throughout the program, residents attend 30 hours of counseling a week. Other group topics include relationship skills, vocational training, GED preparation, family therapy, trauma-informed care and other rotating topics. Dual diagnosis support is available as well.

The staff at The Gathering Place consists of LCSWs, MSWs, LMHCs, case managers and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

The organization also has a very similar program for men called The Life House located on the same campus. For Native American clients, these facilities also include traditional healing methods such as smudging, completion of the Medicine Wheel and other culturally-based teachings. Christian-focused treatment plans are also available. Those in need of aftercare can also continue on to one of the organization’s sober living facilities.

In Summary

Overall, The Gathering Place is a well-rounded residential program for women owned and operated through Volunteers of America Northern Rockies. Treatment includes evidence-based care and sessions drawing from a number of different disciplines; because these programs are state-funded, they are also very affordable. For women in the area, The Gathering Place is a program well worth considering for setting the foundation of recovery.
