Volunteers of America Dakotas: New Start for Women Review
Located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, New Start for Women is a residential treatment program for pregnant and parenting women struggling with addiction. The program is one of many offered through Volunteers of America Dakotas, a state-wide organization owned and operated by the nation-wide Volunteers of America, a non-profit with many programs for veterans and low-income clients.
Accommodations and Food
There are 14 beds in the modest residential home. Two of the rooms are shared between two clients each but the rest are private. All bedrooms come with twin beds, additional bedding and cribs for children and closet space. The facility is also equipped with on-site laundry, shared living areas with cable TV, a kitchen and a nearby basketball court. Clients are served three meals a day by on-staff chefs.
Treatment and Staff
Detox is not available on-site so women in need of those services must do so prior to New Start admission. Though each plan may vary somewhat, all programming includes individual and group therapy that utilizes evidence-based practices including CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Daycare services are available while mothers attend treatment, as are family therapy sessions. In addition to sessions on addiction, groups also cover vocational skills, resume building, relationship skills, parenting classes and perinatal education. Throughout the program, all residents also attend regular 12-step meetings. While some support may be available for mental health issues like depression or anxiety, those with more severe co-occurring disorders may need to seek additional help elsewhere.
The staff at New Start for Women consists of LCDCs, case managers, MFTs, RNs, LMHCs and Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Clients can also take advantage of the facility’s flexible case management services which can include legal aid or help getting government benefits as necessary. Those who complete primary care can also work with staff members on developing stepped down aftercare plans or finding nearby sober living facilities.
In Summary
Overall, New Start for Women does exactly what its name suggests by offering pregnant and parenting women a safe and structured environment to work on their recovery. Treatment includes evidence-based care practices and 12-step support along with a range of life and parenting skills courses. For women in the area seeking an affordable residential option with flexible lengths of stay, New Start for Women through Volunteers of America Dakotas might be the ideal fit.
