Vizown is an alcohol and substance abuse treatment facility for women that was founded in 2014 by Dr. Julio I. Rojas, an LADC who also is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. The rehab’s philosophy is reflected in its name, which is a blend of the words “vision” and “ownership.” Located just southeast of Oklahoma City in Tecumseh, Oklahoma, Vizown not only provides a program for chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders, but it also strives to help women, ages 18 and up, regain their lost dreams or create new ones.
Accommodations and Food
Sprawled over 135 acres of countryside about 45 minutes outside Oklahoma City that are dotted with grazing cattle and horses, this unique rehab has a 24-bed capacity. Country-style cabins that include private bathrooms are shared between two women. A full-time chef cooks meals, catering to a variety of diets. Those who opt for vegan or vegetarian meals have plenty to choose from, including tofu-based entrees. Coffee and tea are offered, but Vizown doesn’t provide sodas or snacks. To encourage healthy lifestyle choices, there are no vending machines on the premises and smokers are out of luck—Vizown is an entirely nonsmoking facility.
Treatment and Staff
At Vizown, treatment length is typically 90 days and a detox program is not offered on site. Prior to admission, clients undergo a pre-admission interview over the phone or in person. Upon intake, they are given an extensive medical consultation and psychiatric evaluation. Based on this information, counselors work with each woman to create an individualized treatment plan. While the rehab employs the 12 steps in the curriculum, they are not the focus of treatment. The program includes group therapy, individual therapy, EMDR, if necessary, and a variety of holistic treatment options. Clients are also encouraged to exercise, participate in nutritional education and attend AA/NA, as well as Emotions Anonymous (EA) meetings.
Vizown combines common treatment methods, like DBT, CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), with alternative approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), trauma-informed addictions treatment (TIAT) and mindfulness- oriented recovery enhancement (MORE). ACT helps a client work through dark emotions, TIAT assists trauma victims and MORE uses mindfulness techniques.
With an emphasis on dual diagnosis support, Vizown employs metabolic testing to o determine what medications are most likely to be effective for clients suffering from depression, anxiety and other co-occurring disorders. The testing involves taking a DNA sample from the client and sending it to a lab. Within 24 hours, a report is generated that provides information on which drugs the client metabolizes well and which are not effective—much faster than the usual 30 days it takes to assess the efficacy of medications.
Out-of-pocket cost for 90 days of treatment at Vizown is $30,000 and the rehab accepts major health insurance plans such as Aetna, Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
Besides Dr. Rojas, there are approximately 50 employees at Vizown, including an advanced practice nurse, who can prescribe meds, a clinical nurse specialist, licensed professional counselors and licensed alcohol and drug counselors.
Vizown offers a variety of holistic healing options, such as expressive therapy, which employs the arts as a tool for healing, art therapy, equine therapy, EMDR, yoga and acupuncture. Some additional fees may apply.
Residents can participate in nature walks, volleyball, swimming, a ropes course, gardening, cooking classes, campfires, social time and general exercise classes. Outings include museum visits, shopping excursions, movies, bowling and special community events in the nearby cities of Norman and Oklahoma City.
Graduates are provided with aftercare, tailored to suit their needs. This may include Skype counseling sessions in addition to the weekly alumni meeting on campus, Vizown plans periodic alumni functions for graduates to re-connect. There is also a private recovery support group page on Facebook for alumni.
With a gorgeous scenic backdrop, complete with a grazing cow or two, Vizown offers a surprisingly affordable western Nirvana. Women seeking a hard core 12-step environment might be more comfortable elsewhere. But those who desire a rehab that offers a wide variety of holistic methods and is sensitive to female issues may consider Vizown a great option.
