The Basics

Established in 1974, VIP Community Services provides outpatient and residential substance treatment to residents of the Bronx, New York. In addition, it offers a number of other supportive services, including case management services, family reunification and mental health treatment.

VIP’s CARF-accredited outpatient programs include a Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) track for opioid addiction (with both methadone and Suboxone) and a long-term standard outpatient program that lasts from three months to a year. VIP treats over 25,000 people for substance abuse each year.

Treatment and Staff

MAT clients are encouraged to come in for a walk-in assessment Monday through Friday. At that time, they meet with a physician to discuss which course of MAT they’re suited for—methadone or Suboxone—and can receive their dosing prescription. They’ll also learn about outpatient therapy groups they can participate in.

Clients who wish to enroll in the outpatient program also attend walk-in assessments, after which they receive a treatment plan that includes group therapy one to four times a week and individual therapy at least once a week. As clients stabilize in their recovery, many step down to attending fewer weekly groups.

The multidisciplinary treatment team at VIP includes LCSWs, MFTs, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and CADCs. Treatment at VIP is client-focused and uses CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to address relapse prevention, anger management and parenting issues. There are also gender-specific treatment groups available for both men and women.

VIP offers holistic treatment practices including art therapy, a wellness group and groups that address re-entry after incarceration and Veteran’s issues. All substance abuse clients are also encouraged to take advantage of VIP’s vocational counseling services.

Attendance of 12-step or other peer support groups isn’t required, but clinicians discuss these options during one-on-one sessions if they think it might benefit the client’s recovery.

Extras

VIP offers housing assistance, smoking cessation and fitness classes. Clients whose loved ones wish to participate in counseling can get referrals to the mental health department’s family therapy programs. Car fare is provided for clients who have trouble commuting to treatment, and breakfast is served on Mondays and lunch is served each weekday.

In Summary

VIP Community Services has provided substance abuse and mental health treatment, as well as a variety of supportive services for families, to Bronx residents for over 40 years. Its outpatient programs offer long-term support that addresses several aspects of clients’ lives, including their relational, vocational and physical health. VIP Community Service’s many departments work together to ensure clients receive all treatment and community services that they’re entitled to.
