Vinland National Center OutpatientThe Basics

Founded in 1976 as a residential treatment facility in Loretto, Minnesota, Vinland National Center has developed a solid reputation for providing substance abuse and addiction treatment for men and women, ages 18 and older, who have cognitive impairment; brain injuries, mental illness or cognitive and learning disabilities. Besides inpatient care, Vinland Center also offers outpatient treatment at its Minneapolis location and supportive housing in Loretto.

Treatment and Staff

Referrals are provided for men and women requiring detox. Prior to admittance, clients complete an admission form, which is followed by a chemical health assessment at their local County Social Services Department. If treatment is recommended, the assessment is faxed over to Vinland National Center, after which a comprehensive intake is scheduled. Clients meet their case managers and work together to create individualized treatment plans. The typical length of the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is 16 weeks.

At Vinland National Center, a holistic approach along with evidence-based practices that include trauma-informed care are utilized. Additionally, treatment acclimatizes to clients’ special needs. The weekly IOP includes nine or more hours of group therapy, music therapy and one on one sessions with case managers. Group topics include grief, loss, anger management, family issues, relationships, parenting, relapse prevention and the reduction of triggers that might cause relapse. Groups range in size but usually there are no more than 10 clients per session.

Gender-specific groups are provided and clients requiring psychotropic medications for co-occurring disorders are referred to a staff psychiatrist who provides a comprehensive evaluation and prescribes medication, followed by medication management appointments.

While attendance at AA/NA meetings is highly encouraged, participation in a 12-step program is not mandated.

The team includes an adaptive yoga instructor, licensed psychologists, case managers, licensed psychiatrists and fitness specialists.

Extras

Holistic offerings include mindfulness meditation and yoga, both taught by instructors who are sensitive to clients’ unique requirements. During music therapy, individuals perform, listen and respond to live music. At Vinland National Center, music therapy operates on the premise that it helps reduce depression and alleviates stress.

During IOP, men and women work on life management skills, which include learning basic computer usage and networking.

Vinland National Center collaborates with LivingWorks Ventures to provide Lodge Living, permanent supportive housing for clean and sober clients. However, staff supervision is limited so residents must be able to live and function independently.

In Summary

The Vinland National Center accommodates the exclusive needs of clients suffering from cognitive impairments. Staff takes the time to adapt to individual learning styles and case managers work one on one to ensure the best possible outcomes for clients. Additionally, the outpatient program offers a flexible curriculum and the facility is easily accessible by public transportation.
