The Basics
Based just north of Scranton, Pennsylvania in the small town of Clarks Summit, interventionist Vince Carolan of Vince Carolan Interventions and Counseling has helped thousands of people successfully conquer their addictions. Along with conducting interventions for those addicted to alcohol and drugs, he also provides interventions and works with clients who struggle with eating disorders, pathological gambling, self-mutilation and other self-defeating behavior. As an LPC, a Board Certified Interventionist and a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Carolan provides interventions, marriage and couples counseling and corporate counseling, treating clients ranging from adolescents to seniors. The Background
Carolan has been working in the field of addictions for almost three decades, and has been a member of the Association of Intervention Specialists since 1994. He completed a Professionals in Residence Program at the Betty Ford Center in Palm Springs, California and is the former Clinical Director of Marworth Treatment Center in Waverly, Pennsylvania. Carolan began his training at the Johnson Institute in Minneapolis. After conducting hundreds of successful interventions on homemakers, self-employed business owners, students and private practice operators, he began to work in the corporate field, working with physicians, lawyers, pharmacists, CEOs, CFOs and other high level executives. To familiarize himself with the staff and practices to inform his referral decisions, Carolan has spent significant time at treatment facilities in California, Florida and Minnesota.
The Approach
Carolan personally works with each client, friend or family member, and does not rely on sub-contracted interventionists or counselors because he believes the complex process of intervention does not lend itself to the involvement of others. The process begins when a family member or friend contacts Carolan, and during that initial call a preliminary plan is devised. Strict confidentiality is observed. Carolan and the caller discuss who will be present at the intervention—family members and friends—and thus the intervention team is formed. Based on the history of the client and the family, Carolan determines which intervention style is most likely to yield success. Oftentimes, Carolan employs a combination of three styles. These are the Johnson Model, Arise and Family Systems; Carolan is proficient in all three. Carolan usually spends most of the day of the intervention with the intervention team, educating them and assisting in writing and rehearsing their letters to the client. This is usually done in the interventionists office or a neutral location such as a hotel conference room. In preparation of the intervention, Carolan will have determined with the family which treatment center is best for the client, whether it’s an outpatient, inpatient or self-help program.
Post-Intervention & Summary
Post-intervention, Carolan continues to work with the client and the family members and friends who were involved with the intervention, should they wish to remain involved. While the client is in the treatment center, Carolan remains in contact with the client and the intervention team, to offer support and continuing education in regards to addiction and treatment. Once the client is no longer at the treatment center, Carolan offers counseling services and aftercare. Fees are calculated based on the style of intervention required and travel arrangements for the client to treatment center and for Carolan himself.
