Villa Kali Ma Sober LivingVilla Kali Ma Recovery for Women Review

Villa Kali Ma is located in La Costa, a small residential community in Carlsbad, CA. Kay White, a certified life coach and yoga instructor, founded Kali Ma in 2012 to provide adult women of all ages and backgrounds with support for recovery from addiction using the spiritual philosophy and practice of yoga.

Ms. White dedicates her program to the villa’s namesake Kali, a Goddess in Hindu mythology associated with “radical transformation.”

Accommodations and Amenities

Kali Ma is a spacious, well-appointed home in a quiet residential neighborhood near San Diego. Filled with high-end amenities, the house has two shared bedrooms and one individual bedroom—each with a full or queen sized bed, luxury furnishings, linens and thoughtful decor. All guest rooms have a private bathroom and balcony.

Common areas include a yoga studio with polished wood floors, a meditation room with colorful Persian carpets, cushions and Buddhist-themed décor, and multiple living rooms with overstuffed sofas and chairs. The spacious grounds include landscaped garden areas, a large pool and an outdoor lounge. The house has WiFi throughout and a work station with a desktop computer, printer and fax machine. Clients also have access to an on-site fitness room with an elliptical machine, treadmill and free weights.

Kali Ma provides three meals a day for their clients and all of the food is healthy and organic. Clients cook dinner together and prepare their own breakfast and lunch from food made available by kitchen staff. If clients have food requests, they can make adjustments to the grocery list for that week and the house manager will purchase the food for them. Guests can also juice with organic fruits and vegetables.

The minimum stay at Villa is 30 days but clients are welcome to stay as long as they need. The program has space available for a maximum of five people, but usually has a three to four. The founder and house manager lives on site as well.

Rules and Regulations

Kali Ma’s goal is to ensure sustainable recovery through changing the client’s thought process using the practice and principles of yoga. Philosophically, the founder believes that this ancient practice promotes alignment with physical and spiritual recovery, with scientifically proven benefits including improved immune system, calming anxiety and compulsive thinking, improving organ function and boosting self-esteem.

Clients begin the day with a group meeting which includes a reading followed by discussion about the relevance of the reading. Afterwards, they participate in an hour-and-a-half yoga session—with Hatha yoga practiced during the week and Kundalini yoga on weekends. Clients focus on breath work and meditation throughout their yoga practice; the belief here is that this helps with relapse prevention and responding to triggers as they arise.

Kali Ma relies heavily upon various popular spiritual healing books including The Language of Letting Go by Melody Beattie, The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz and The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself by Michael A. Singer. As a group, clients finish one book before moving on to the other using their principles as a mainstay to recovery. Kali Ma teaches that the continual study of these books helps clients to let go of past thought processes and reprogram the mind with healthy thoughts and behaviors.

Outside of structured recovery work, during the day clients have the option of either attending school, working or being involved in a local relapse prevention program or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). In the evening, clients and the house manager all make dinner together. Afterwards, the group may meditate, have an outing or a crystal healing session—or they may stay at home and watch an uplifting documentary or film.

The house requires participation in a 12-step or similar recovery program at least three times a week and offers transportation to and from the meetings. Family visits are welcome by request. Kali Ma has random drug and alcohol testing, and requires regular journaling, daily chores and goal setting.

Extras

Kali Ma regularly invites guest speakers who teach everything from personal empowerment, mythology, art therapy, Sacred Sound Healing to Ayurveda nutrition. Clients are also connected with practitioners of Reiki, Reflexology, Rolfing, Craniosacral work, Chinese medicine, homeophathy and aromatherapy (usually for an extra charge).

Occasionally, the house will have day trips or outings for fun and healthy activities including horseback riding, hiking, music festivals, comedy shows, shopping and street fairs.

Summary

Villa Kali Ma is a great option for women who are yoga enthusiasts and are open to healing though meditation and spiritual study. Kali Ma focuses on finding new ways to think—making it a great option for those struggling with triggers or who have a history of relapse.

Kali Ma is also a solid environment for those who are interested in learning how to lead a healthy and organic lifestyle through developing their mind-body connection. Although Villa does not use traditional recovery methods like individual therapy, DBT or CBT, the affordable price and comprehensive amenities makes this a sound sober living choice to focus on spiritual recovery in conjunction with other treatment modalities.
