Santa Monica CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in 2005 in Santa Monica, California, by Jenevieve Minelian and her sister, Elizabeth Minelian, Victoria’s House provides high-end sober living to women with co-occurring disorders who are in the early stages of recovery from chemical dependency. Besides naming the house after their mother, Victoria’s House is also dedicated to the founders’ brother John who died from addiction when he was 24 years old.

Accommodations and Amenities

Victoria’s House accommodates 14 clients in a complex made up of five residences. They are housed in double or private rooms, which feature wood-tiled floors and pastel-colored walls. Rooms feature twin or full-sized beds with dark wood headboards, dressers, desks and chairs. Flowery comforters and pillows adorn the beds, while a modern art paintings hang from walls. The wood-tiled living rooms feature comfy couches, flat screen TVs and bookshelves.

Victoria’s House provides daily breakfast and two weekly dinners, one following a relapse prevention educational class and the other accompanied by an in-house 12-step meeting. Clients are responsible for other meals and preparation, which is performed in one of two fully equipped kitchens. The house includes around the clock staff.

Rules and Regulations

Program director Elizabeth Minelian screens potential clients, making sure that Victoria’s House and the individual are a suitable match. Victoria’s House asks for a minimum 90-day length of stay, but is open to accepting clients who cannot commit to that entire stretch. Minelian provides referrals to local outpatient substance abuse treatment centers if needed. Local drug rehabs that collaborate with Victoria’s House and provide outpatient care include Clearview Treatment ProgramsThe CanyonAuthentic Recovery Center and BLVD Treatment Centers.

During the first 30 days, clients are expected to follow a daily routine and generally stay close to the residence, when not in treatment or at a meeting. After that time, with the support of staff, employment ventures, educational pursuits, and recreational activities are incorporated into their day-to-day routines. Since many clients attend a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), 12-step meeting requirements vary on an individual basis, but the house’s two weekly meetings count towards attendance.

While Victoria’s House follows a 12-step protocol and expects clients to obtain and actively work with sponsors, those who prefer to participate in non-12-step recovery support groups, including SMART Recovery and Refuge Recovery, a Buddhist oriented program, are allowed to do so.

For the first month, the curfew is 11 pm seven days a week. After that time, the curfew is 11:30 Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. Drug and alcohol screening is conducted a minimum of three times a week. Victoria’s House operates on a strict zero tolerance policy.

Besides Elizabeth Minelian who is a Master’s-level CADC, staff includes Executive Director Jenevieve Minelian who attended UCLA’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Studies program and who also provides a multitude of mentoring services. Additionally, there is David Cisneros, a Master’s-level certified addiction treatment counselor and Jill Marissa Conway, an LCSW. All staff members are in recovery, and are active in a 12-step program. The 30-day cost is $5,000, but clients who commit to a 90-day length of stay are eligible for a reduced rate.

Extras

Clients receive gym membership and local transportation services between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm. Victoria’s House is a member of the Sober Living Network Los Angeles County Sober Living Coalition.
