Veterans Treatment CenterVeterans Treatment Center Review

Based out of San Diego, California, Veterans Village of San Diego is a multi-faceted organization that provides a range of recovery services for homeless and low-income veterans. Within the organization is the Veterans Treatment Center, a residential program based on a social model of treatment for homeless veterans dealing with alcoholism and co-occurring disorders.

Accommodations and Food

Veterans Village of San Diego, which moves clients through a phase of programs, can fit a total of 185 men and women. In the initial stage, residents stay in dorm-style accommodations designed to emulate military barracks with twin bunked beds, dressers and shared storage space. This phase may last 30 days before clients continue on to the second and more structured part of the program where they share rooms with two to three other residents, again with bunked twin beds. Programs can last for up to a year. Throughout their time at the facility, residents eat three meals a day served cafeteria-style.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake process to help staff members develop their individualized treatment plans. Though the initial 30 days serve as a probationary period, during that time clients attend both individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based care practices relying primarily on CBT. They also attend weekly meetings with case managers as well as weekly 12-step meetings. The next phase lasts for a minimum of 90 days, though it can also stretch longer, and is designed to expand clients’ life skills and knowledge of recovery. Group sessions focus on relapse prevention, addiction education, anger management, life skills and a host of other topics. Dual diagnosis support is also available.

The staff at Veterans Treatment Center consists of case managers, CADCs, MSWs, psychologists, RNs and additional Master’s-level counselors.

Extras

In addition to the above, clients who complete these two phases of the program can continue on to the employment development phase which functions as something of a sober living program where residents work on job skills and try to find employment. After that, clients can progress to a community reintegration phase as needed with support of the staff.

A range of flexible aftercare programs are available including stepped down outpatient treatment and placement in sober homes.

In Summary

Overall, the Veterans Treatment Center is a well-rounded organization which provides comprehensive recovery programs for homeless and low-income veterans. Treatment is evidence-based and includes 12-step and dual diagnosis support. The programs are long-term and feature a full range of recovery and life skills to help clients get on with their lives. For those in the area open to a long-term program, Veterans Treatment Center is worth considering.
