Veritas Collaborative is a North Carolina based facility that provides adolescents and adults with acute eating disorder treatment. The adult facilities located in the college town of Durham offer residential care that utilizes evidence-based protocols focused on treating the whole person and not just the symptoms. The individualized programming includes group and individual therapy, nutrition education and full community support in a gender diverse environment.
Accommodations and Food
The modern, state of the art facility that houses adult clients in Durham is bright, cheerful and inviting. The recently renovated building can accommodate up to 25 residents in what’s referred to as its inpatient and residential divisions. There are private and semi private bedrooms fully furnished with full beds, dressers and desks, and there are shared bathrooms throughout the facility. The common areas include a living room space with a TV, comfy couches and chairs and a fireplace, as well as quiet sitting rooms and an additional lounge space in the dining area.
A full kitchen hosts culinary classes for the residents. Additionally, there is a cafeteria style dining room where several meal choices are offered daily, along with snacks.
Treatment and Staff
While at most treatment facilities, the terms “inpatient” and “residential” are interchangeable, at Veritas Collaborative, the inpatient program is specifically for adults who are in need of medical stabilization, detox or have labs that are frequently abnormal. This level of care is monitored 24 hours a day by medical staff. In some cases, clients are admitted straight into the inpatient program, while others can begin at the residential level, which is considered a step-down treatment at Veritas.
The adult residential program offers counseling for both the clients and their families and caregivers. There are at least three group sessions per day and one individual session per week. There are also frequent appointments with a medical doctor and visits from the psychiatric staff. Nutrition education includes cooking classes led by chefs and nutritionists who teach the clients how to shop for themselves and prepare meals that are healthy and well balanced. Group therapy is for men and women together, though they are kept small in number to account for personal attention from the therapists.
Programming approaches are evidence-based and include DBT, CBT, Family Based Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The treatment team also integrates a number of holistic and expressive methods such as art and music therapy, movement therapy and mindfulness.
Veritas staff includes a large nursing and physician roster, case managers, LCSWs, nutritionists, dietitians, psychologists and culinary experts.
There are daily afternoon therapeutic activities, along with yoga and stretching classes. Additionally, clients have some weekend outings once they are stabilized. Aftercare services include the outpatient treatment tracks.
Veritas Collaborative is a community based treatment program that encourages clients to learn how to live healthy and fulfilling lives by teaching valuable life skills and addressing body image and their feelings about food. The new and beautiful facility is comfortable and spacious, making each client feel right at home while receiving comprehensive treatment.
