The Basics

Veritas Collaborative’s outpatient eating disorder treatment programs are available to both adolescents and adults at the Durham, North Carolina and Richmond, Virginia locations. The outpatient tracks are typical step-down programs from the intensive inpatient and residential program offered through Veritas. Outpatient levels of care include a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)  and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) Treatment that integrates evidence-based modalities through individualized programming within a warm, inviting therapeutic environment.

Treatment and Staff

The PHP is the highest level of outpatient treatment and basically picks up where the residential program leaves off. The PHP is offered to both adolescent clients starting at the age of eight, and adults. The PHP starts off at seven days a week and eventually steps down to five before clients transition to IOP. The IOP is for clients who are completely stable medically and are usually back at work or school. This track takes place three evenings a week for about three hours per night. Eventually clients move into the standard OP track, in which they recieve treatment on an as needed basis.

The outpatient treatment consists of group and individual sessions, with several group meetings per day in the PHP and at least one individual therapy session per week. The groups are co-ed and address several common issues surrounding eating disorders, like body image, fear of food and negative self talk, and offer life skills, psychoeducation and relapse prevention techniques. Additionally, adolescent clients are given educational support with certified teachers throughout their entire treatment experience.

Programming protocols include CBT, DBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Family Systems Therapy, combined with some holistic and expressive methods, such as music and art therapy, play therapy, and mindfulness approaches. There are also recreational options and culinary training classes that teach the importance of nutrition and how to shop for and prepare balanced meals.

During treatment clients regularly visit with the medical staff on site, which includes nurses and physicians, and have appointments with the staff psychiatrists. Additional support staff members are LCSWs, psychologists and dietitians.

Extras

Family involvement and support is an essential element of success at Veritas, and there are counseling sessions and classes for loved ones of clients.

In Summary

Veritas Collaborative is a comprehensive eating disorder treatment program that offers individualized care within a supportive community. Both the adolescent and adult outpatient programming combines tried and true treatment approaches with holistic methods to create a collaborative atmosphere that’s conducive to healing.
