Ventura County Behavioral HealthThe Basics

Ventura County Behavioral Health Department offers a range of outpatient services for substance abuse and mental health issues at clinics in the Southern California cities of Ventura, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Oxnard and Fillmore. From assessments to individual therapy to group therapy to education, it has something for everyone. In addition to providing substance abuse treatment, a DUI program and mental health services for adolescents are also available.

Treatment and Staff

Ventura County Behavioral Health’s outpatient programs are evidence-based, focusing on treating clients with dignity and compassion. Services are available for adults and adolescents, with the total length of treatment depending on a client’s needs. Each program typically has between 10 to 15 people at a time, keeping things small and comfortable. Detox is not available, but referrals can be made.

The outpatient services include assessments, group therapy, medication management, individual therapy, interventions and education. Group topics include relapse prevention, trauma, anger management, introduction to the 12 steps and coping skills. Individual therapy sessions are one hour in length, giving clients a chance to receive individualized attention. In addition to treating substance abuse, dual diagnosis support is available for those with co-occurring disorders such as depression and anxiety. CBT and DBT are used in both a group and one-on-one setting.

The educational aspect of treatment addresses the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, in addition to the addiction-as-a-disease model. Informative lectures also provide clients with a more in-depth look at the history of the 12 steps and how to apply them in everyday life. While attending 12-step meetings during treatment is not mandatory, it is highly recommended.

Clients are encouraged to work on personal relationships during family therapy. These one-hour sessions give the client and their family members a chance to work on communication, boundaries and codependency.

The staff at each location includes psychiatrists, nurses and CSACs.

Extras

Ventura County Behavioral Health offers DUI programs for both first-time and multiple offenders, including education sessions and group and individual therapy. Both day and evening sessions are available to help accommodate the client’s schedule.

In addition to treating the symptoms of chemical dependency, the organization helps clients obtain employment and find housing.
