Ventura CaliforniaThe Basics

Ventura County Behavioral Health provides a variety of substance abuse and prevention programs throughout Ventura County in Southern California. Its Oxnard location offers A New Start for Moms, a comprehensive outpatient program for pregnant and parenting women.

A New Start for Moms has been in operation for over 20 years and provides dual diagnosis support and case management services allowing clients to address all aspects of their addiction. Spanish-speaking services are also available, as is on-site childcare.

Treatment and Staff

After an assessment, clients attend an orientation session and one-on-one treatment planning session with their primary counselors. Treatment plans are customized to each client’s needs, and clients remain in the program anywhere from 30 days to two years. Treatment plans include group and individual therapy at least once a week with both morning and afternoon groups available.

New Start takes a trauma-informed care approach to treatment, endorsing the belief that many substance abuse issues stem from past traumatic events. It has a Seeking Safety group and also uses CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help clients learn relapse prevention and anger management. Clients are also encouraged to attend 12-step or other peer support meetings outside of treatment.

The treatment team includes MSWs, CADCs, MFTs, psychiatrists and nurse practitioners who can provide dual diagnosis support, including medication management for mental health diagnoses. Clients with co-occurring disorders have regularly scheduled psychiatric appointments, and those in need of Suboxone for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction can receive prescriptions from Ventura County Behavioral Health’s mental health department.

Extras

A New Start for Moms offers transportation services for clients who have difficulty getting to treatment appointments. It also employs a community services director to help clients coordinate medical care. All services are available in Spanish, and Ventura County Behavioral Health also has a prevention program that focuses on educating teenage girls of the consequences of substance abuse.

In Summary

Ventura County Behavioral Health’s A New Start for Moms has been providing community-based outpatient treatment to pregnant and parenting women for more than two decades. The program seeks to help women heal from past trauma while also ensuring they have access to the medical and community services that can help improve their health, create resilience and stabilize their families.
