VARP, Inc.VARP, Inc. Review

With locations in San Bernardino and Blythe, California, VARP, Inc. offers residential treatment to adults struggling with addiction. The organization was founded in 1979 and operates separate facilities for men and women. All programs last for 45 to 90 days and each offers a full continuum of treatment services.

Accommodations and Food

VARP runs three separate locations—Gibson House for Men, Gibson House Recovery Center for Women and Metcalf Recovery Ranch, also for men. The Gibson homes each have 40 beds while Metcalf can accommodate 20. While the layouts of each facility differ somewhat, bedrooms in all three residences are shared between two to three clients. All rooms have twin beds, dressers and shared closet space. In addition to the bedrooms, the homes also have WiFi throughout, common areas with cable TV and fully-equipped kitchens. Both Gibson House for Men and Metcalf Recovery Ranch also have outdoor pools which residents can use during downtime. Throughout their stay, clients eat three meals a day cooked by staff chefs.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment. Though the organization doesn’t offer on-site detox, those in need can get referrals as necessary. While programming may vary slightly by facility, all treatment incoporates individual and group therapy centered around evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT. Throughout their stay, all residents are also required to attend regular 12-step meetings. Group sessions cover many topics including Big Book studies, relapse prevention, coping skills, recreational activities and family therapy. While basic support for depression and anxiety is available, those with more severe co-occurring disorders may want to seek additional help elsewhere.

The staff at VARP includes MFTs, CADCs, LPCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Clients with physical disabilities are welcome to attend and service dogs are allowed. Those who complete primary care at VARP can also work with staff members to arrange either additional residential or outpatient treatment at other facilities as a form of aftercare.

In Summary

Overall, VARP, Inc. is an expansive organization with solid, affordable gender-specific inpatient options. All treatment is evidence-based and includes ample 12-step support and aftercare planning services as needed. For those seeking a flexible residential option and who don’t need significant dual diagnosis support, VARP is worth considering.
