Vanderbilt Behavioral Health Outpatient Review

Vanderbilt Behavioral Health in Nashville, Tennessee has both inpatient and outpatient programs for adults struggling with psychotic and mood disorders. The adult outpatient tracks provide acute care for individuals, their partners and families through a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). This program is ideal for those who need more support than what they would receive within a standard outpatient treatment, but are not able to commit to a residential program.

Treatment and Staff

The PHP clients undergo a thorough assessment process prior to admission. The assessment determines the level of care needed, and what specific protocols would be appropriate during treatment. The outpatient care includes the same elements as the residential program. The individualized care may consist of any combination of a number of treatment options.

A typically PHP experience may consist of several group sessions per day, pharmacology, nutritional education and services, medication education, individual therapy and recreational activities and therapy.

The Vanderbilt treatment team specializes in a number of mental illnesses. This includes depression, anxiety disorders, phobias, schizophrenia, OCD, sleep disorders, dissociative disorders and more.

The PHP, which can care for up to 20 clients at one time, is a five day a week track for up to six hours per day. The mornings begin with a community meeting that goes over daily goals then continues with up to four group sessions per day. There are also medication education sessions throughout the week. Lunch is served every day, and clients have access to the on-site gym and recreational area.

Other elements of treatment include anger management, relapse prevention, coping skills, life skills, communication and tips on how to transition successfully back into the clients’ communities and homes lives.

It’s worth noting, there is no set amount of time that clients need to commit to the PHP. Typically they remain in the program between two and four weeks. Common therapies include CBT and other evidence-based approaches.

LCSWs and a psychiatric nursing staff operate and oversee the PHP.

Extras

The facility provides transportation for some clients who live within a certain distance from the hospital.

Following the PHP, Vanderbilt refers clients to aftercare programs.

There are services for family members of clients. This includes counseling and education.

In Summary

The outpatient program at Vanderbilt Behavioral Health is a suitable and effective alternative to an inpatient treatment. Treatment is specialized, and fosters a sense of autonomy for the participant while still keeping him or her involved in a highly structured program. The PHP gives a clients and their families a strong foundation to work from after experiencing past mental health struggles.
