Hartford MichiganThe Basics

For over 30 years the Van Buren/Cass District Health Department has provided outpatient substance abuse treatment to the residents of southwestern Michigan. Its outpatient services are located in Hartford, a small town in Van Buren county.

The VBCD’s mission is to “assist individuals, families, and communities in the prevention, assessment and treatment of substance abuse issues in an effort to promote health, safety and community prosperity.” In addition to treating alcohol and drug abuse, the VBCD also provides residents of Van Buren and Cass Counties with primary care, mental health and dental services.

Treatment and Staff

After an assessment, clients are given a treatment plan that includes individual and group therapy. Treatment at VBCD is at the standard outpatient level and clients attend group therapy once or twice a week and individual therapy as-needed—usually once a week. The duration of treatment is progress-based and dependent on each client’s needs, but most clients complete their treatment plan in 12 to 16 weeks.

Therapy groups at VBCD usually contain 10 to 12 participants and are led by Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors including LPCs and CAADCs. Groups use Motivational Interviewing (MI), Seeking Safety, Living in Balance and Helping Men Recovery curricula. Both co-ed and gender-specific groups are available.

Clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings while in treatment, however those enrolled in the New Directions program (for court-ordered offenders) are required to attend weekly AA/NA meetings on their own time.

The treatment team at VBCD is qualified to treat co-occurring disorders but refer those with severe mental health diagnoses to nearby mental health clinics for additional therapy and medication.

Extras

Clients who are parents can enroll along with their children in the Celebrating Families course to improve their parenting skills. Dental and primary care services are also available at the Hartford, Dawagiac and Mattawan locations.

In Summary

The Van Buren/Cass District Health Department has been providing the residents of Southwestern Michigan with effective substance abuse treatment for over 30 years. With specific treatment groups for men and women and those who have encountered problems with law enforcement, its programs are tailored to provide the best social conditions for effective therapy and addiction education.
