The Basics
Valley Health Associates provides outpatient treatment in Salinas, California. Programs include DUI Diversion, a standard outpatient program and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with methadone. Since 1996, VHA has been serving the residents of Monterey County, the agricultural hub of California made famous by John Steinbeck’s novels.
Treatment and Staff
VHA’s most robust programs are its DUI Diversion programs that last three to six months. These include a weekly psychoeducation group that addresses the disease of addiction and teaches tools for handling triggers. Clients in these programs also have individual therapy as-needed, with at least one session every 90 days.
Clients enrolled in the standard outpatient track meet for weekly group therapy that includes processing skills and addiction education. They also and have one-on-one sessions as-needed. The average length of treatment is three months.
Court-ordered clients are usually required to attend three 12-step meetings each week, though all clients are encouraged to attend AA/NA or other peer support meetings. The treatment team is comprised of CADC and Registered Alcohol and Drug Trainees (RADTs). Clients with co-occurring disorders are referred to a community mental health clinic for additional treatment for their mental health diagnosis.
Opioid addicts who wish to wean themselves off of methadone can participate in VHA’s 21-day methadone detox program in which a physician helps them taper doses over the course of three weeks. Clients in this program also meet with a counselor over the course of treatment and can receive HIV testing and counseling.
Extras
For opioid addicts who have had two treatment failures in the past year, VHA offers a methadone maintenance program. In addition to receiving methadone from VHA’s physician, clients enrolled in this track have weekly individual counseling, are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings and receive case management services to help reach educational and professional goals.
