Founded in 1970, Valle de Sol provides behavioral, primary healthcare, court-mandated and social services in Phoenix, Arizona. Originally established to fill a gap in treatment for the Latino community, outpatient programs that include substance abuse and dual diagnosis support are now available in eight locations. All services are available in English and Spanish, and though programs are open to all, maintaining culturally appropriate is essential. The organization was recently awarded a three-year CARF accreditation, which is the highest level available, for the fourth time.
Treatment and Staff
With four facilities in Phoenix and one each in West Valley, Maryvale, Southeast Valley and Tempe, clients can access a range of services for children, adolescents and adults. Additionally, a community resource center in Phoenix provides valuable education, information and referrals. Clients receive individualized treatment plans determining their required level of care. For those in need of medically supervised detox or residential care, referrals are made to other programs.
The outpatient opiate addiction program treats clients over 18 who have been abusing opiates for at least 12 months. The services include medication-assisted treatment using methadone, individual DBT and group counseling. Clients in this program receive daily dosing while participating in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Dosing is gradually reduced as progress is made and clients eventually move to weekly sessions.
The IOP utilizes the Matrix Model, which combines group and individual therapy and relapse prevention curriculum over a 16-week period. Sessions occur three times a week, and may also incorporate art therapy, stress and anger management classes. Women’s groups that address relationship issues help clients find healthy communication skills and discuss concerns they may not raise in larger or mixed-gender sessions.
A team of registered nurses, medical director, LCSWs, CACs and specialized therapists facilitate streamlined care. All clients undergo hour-long psychiatric evaluations and, if needed, ongoing medication management. Those prescribed medication for co-occurring disorders meet with their board-certified psychiatrist for monthly, 30-minute, monitoring sessions.
Clients can also participate in classes to assist with their parenting skills, family counseling and family support and stabilization services. Classes are available at various times, including evenings and weekends.
For those court-mandated to complete specific programs, a 16-hour DUI education course, domestic violence program and anger management classes are available. Each of these consists of education sessions, group counseling and case management. The services meet State requirements and are offered through referrals from judicial and government agencies. In addition to IOP for adolescents, younger clients can participate in behavior coaching, gender-separated resiliency groups and a youth leadership program.
The outpatient substance abuse, dual diagnosis support and education services offered by Valle de Sol meet the highest levels required by the state of Arizona. With access to comprehensive primary and pediatric healthcare as well as social services, those seeking treatment find affordable, compassionate care. Costs vary according to specific services, but insurance and government assistance can cover all or most of the fees.
