The Basics
Valenta was founded in 2006 to provide outpatient treatment for eating disorders in Rancho Cucamonga, California, near Los Angeles. It subsequently added an outpatient program for the treatment of depression and individual therapy and nutritional counseling services.
Dr. Jeffrey N. Mar is Valenta’s founder. Dr. Mar graduated from Dartmouth’s medical school and continues to conduct research on the treatment of eating disorders. He is board certified in psychiatry and pediatrics and is also a certified eating disorder clinician.
Treatment and Staff
Valenta offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for eating disorders. Clients check in to the facility each week day at 7am. They spend each morning in goal-setting and spiritual care sessions as well as meal planning classes and processing groups. After lunch, they have CBT sessions, expressive therapy, movement and self-care classes. Treatment ends at 3 pm.
Valenta’s depression treatment program is offered at the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) level of care. Clients attend treatment three to four days each week. They check in to the center at 4 pm and have CBT groups, goal setting sessions, nutrition counseling and mindfulness training until 7:30 pm.
The treatment team at Valenta includes Dr. Mar, LMFTs, LCSWs and several Registered Dieticians. All clients have individual therapy at least once each week. In addition to CBT, therapy uses DBT and EMDR for trauma processing. Most clients also participate in family therapy.
The duration of treatment is progress-based. The treatment team works with each client to reintegrate them into independent living by helping them create and pursue professional and academic goals as they progress in treatment.
Extras
Valenta offers weekly family group therapy. It has created a Healthy Student Program which takes outpatient services to local universities for the treatment of eating disorders. Valenta’s clinicians also provide one-on-one therapy and nutritional counseling outside of its outpatient programs.
