VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System Review

Based in Los Angeles, California, VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System is an expansive organization providing a broad range of primary healthcare services to veterans and their families. The inpatient substance abuse treatment location is a CARF-accredited behavioral health hospital and a subsidiary of the US Department of Veterans Affairs. In addition to its outpatient programs (which are available at clinics throughout the city), the hospital location also offers acute inpatient care and detox for clients struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders.

Accommodations and Food

The Los Angeles VA Hospital has a total of 1,087 beds for medical and surgical use, approximately 400 of which can be put to use for for mental health and addiction-related needs. Accommodations may vary and both private and shared rooms are available with twin beds and essentially clinical decor throughout. In addition to patient rooms, the hospital also has outdoor walking paths, common lounge areas with television, therapy rooms and a cafeteria. Throughout their stay, all residents are served three nutritious meals a day plus snacks whenever necessary.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff members determine their needs. Those in need of detox services can do so on-site with medical and psychiatric supervision—because most addiction-related stays are acute, this is often rolled into treatment before clients are discharged or transitioned into outpatient care. Though there are no fixed lengths of stay, residents typically remain in these programs for 30 days or fewer.

Once stabilized, residents attend both individual and group therapy groups which include evidence-based treatment practices such as CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Extensive dual diagnosis support is available including medication management and trauma-informed care. Twelve-step participation is also highly encouraged and often required. Groups cover a vast array of topics including anger management, relapse prevention, addiction as a disease, life skills, social skills and emotional processing.

The staff at VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System consists of MDs, psychatrists, psychologists, RNs, LVNs, LMHCs, LPCs, CADCs, LMFTs, LCSWs and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.

Extras

As mentioned, the organization also has outpatient clinics providing standard and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for addiction and co-occurring disorders. A full suite of primary medical care options are available as well. Other specialized services include geriatric psychiatry, educational seminars, jail outreach, support for spinal injury and housing and counseling for homeless veterans. Those who complete a primary care plan can also work with staff members to develop discharge and stepped down aftercare plans.

In Summary

In all, the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System offers an exhaustive range of medical and behavioral health services to the city’s veterans. Treatment plans are individualized and include medical and psychiatric oversight, 12-step integration and dual diagnosis support. All programs available through the hospital are medically-oriented and available only to veterans and their families—still, the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System is a great resource for veterans in LA.
