VA Caribbean Healthcare System

The Basics

With a number of facilities spread throughout Puerto Rico (Arecibo, Comerio, Guayama, Mayaguez, Utuado, Ponce and Vieques) and the Virgin Islands (Kings Hill and St. Thomas), the VA Caribbean Healthcare System is an expansive organization run and operated through the US Department of Veterans Affairs. In addition to providing a number of primary healthcare services, the organization’s facilities offer counseling and psychiatric services, including outpatient treatment for addiction.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning a program, each client goes through an initial assessment and intake process to help staff members develop their individualized treatment plans. While detox services are not available on-site, clients can be referred to local hospitals as necessary. Though the specifics of treatment vary by clinic and by therapist, clients can attend both group and individual therapy rooted in evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT with social workers and psychiatrists. Dual diagnosis support is also included into these programs as necessary and 12-step participation is strongly encouraged. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and medication management services are also available.

The staff at VA Caribbean Healthcare System includes doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, RNs, LCSWs, LCPCs and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.

Extras

In addition to treatment for addiction, the organization provides an exhaustive list of additional healthcare services including X-ray testing, cardiology, dietary counseling, on-site pharmacies and other preventative care options. Those in need of aftercare services can also continue on with therapy at a stepped down rate as necessary.

In Summary

Overall, the VA Caribbean Healthcare System is a wide-ranging, community-oriented organization which offers an exhaustive list of healthcare services to low-income and homeless veterans. In addition to its many healthcare options, flexible treatment programs for addiction which include dual diagnosis support and 12-step integration are also available. While somewhat of a niche option, the VA Caribbean Healthcare System remains an invaluable resource for those in the area.
