VA Boston Healthcare System Jamaica PlanVA Boston Healthcare System: Jamaica Plain Review

The Veterans Administration Boston Healthcare System’s Jamaica Plain campus provides both residential and long-term outpatient treatment to US veterans. Located in the Mission Hill neighborhood, near Olmstead Park, the campus features a modern hospital, multiple clinical buildings and a home that houses its residential substance abuse clients.

Jamaica Plain’s substance abuse programs have been in operation since the 1980s, and both outpatient and residential treatment plans at Jamaica Plain can incorporate extensive dual diagnosis support, including treatment for PTSD.

Accommodations and Food

Clients reside in a ranch house on the edge of the campus and are provided shuttle buses to treatment activities. The home treats up to 15 clients at a time, all of whom have roommates. The residence features a common area for TV and recreation and a full-service kitchen with a staff that provides all meals and snacks.

Treatment and Staff

Clients undergo a full bio-psycho-social assessment and then receive a treatment plan that is primarily made up of daily evidence-based group therapy for six weeks. Clients have group therapy from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. After, they may have individual therapy, which is scheduled as-needed, and attend nearby AA/NA meetings.

Groups are led by LCSWs and psychologists and use CBT and mindfulness training to teach relapse prevention and developing coping skills. There are also psychodynamic processing groups, a spirituality group and groups for female veterans. Some clients may also participate in a six-session individual therapy program that focuses on Motivational Interviewing (MI). All clients also have weekly exercise classes as part of their treatment plans.

Residents with mental health diagnoses consult with a psychiatrist and/or nurse practitioner for additional counseling and medication management for co-occurring disorders. They may also be referred to specific mental health therapy groups in Jamaica Plain’s mental health treatment unit.

Extras

Once clients have stabilized, they can earn day and overnight passes to visit family off-site. Clients can also request family therapy if their loved ones wish to participate.

For aftercare, many of Jamaica Plain’s residential clients continue treatment in its long-term outpatient program.

In Summary

VA Boston Healthcare System’s Jamaica Plain campus offers a six-week residential program that focuses on targeted evidence-based therapy to help clients process trauma, develop coping skills and prevent relapse. The substance abuse treatment program works in alliance with its mental health department to ensure that clients have support for PTSD and other mental health conditions that may have been caused or exacerbated by their military service.
