VA Boston Healthcare System Jamaica Plain OutpatientThe Basics

The Veterans Administration Boston Healthcare System’s Jamaica Plain campus provides both residential and outpatient treatment to US Veterans. The programs, which are located in the Mission Hill neighborhood near Olmstead Park, have been in operation since the 1980s.

The outpatient program treats clients long-term, with most staying six months to several years. It features dedicated groups for female veterans and those in need of dual diagnosis support, including PTSD, depression and anxiety.

Treatment and Staff

Clients undergo a full bio-psycho-social assessment and then receive a treatment plan that includes group therapy once or twice a week. Currently, there is a waiting list for clients in need of individual therapy, which can be scheduled as-needed. Clients often stay in the program indefinitely, forming close bonds with each other and the treatment team.

Groups are led by LCSWs and psychologists and use CBT and mindfulness training to teach relapse prevention and develop coping skills. There are also psychodynamic processing groups, a spirituality group and groups for female veterans. Some clients may also participate in a six-session individual program that focuses on Motivational Interviewing (MI). Clients are encouraged to attend 12-step or other peer support meetings, such as SMART Recovery, in addition to treatment groups.

Once they’ve participated in substance abuse treatment for several weeks, clients with co-occurring disorders may also be referred to Jamaica Plain’s mental health treatment unit to attend therapy groups targeted for treating PTSD, anxiety and depression.

Extras

Clients in need of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opiate addiction or addiction that’s resistant to treatment can receive Suboxone prescriptions and Vivitrol injections at the VA’s nearby Broxton clinic.

In Summary

VA Boston Healthcare System’s Jamaica Plain campus offers a long-term outpatient program that uses targeted evidence-based group therapy to help clients process trauma, develop coping skills and prevent relapse. Its open-ended treatment plans allow clients to build trust with the treatment team and form friendships with other clients. The program works in alliance with its mental health department to ensure that clients have support for PTSD and other mental health conditions that may have been caused or exacerbated by their military service.
