Based out of Hot Springs, North Dakota, the VA Black Hills Health Care System is a multi-faceted organization owned and operated through the US Department of Veterans Affairs. It offers a range of affordable medical services, as well as residential treatment for addiction and co-occurring disorders.
Accommodations and Food
The residential treatment program is housed on the organization’s Hot Springs campus and has a total of 160 beds. Some private rooms are available though most are shared between two to three clients. Rooms are set up dorm-style with twin beds, dressers and shared closet space. The facility also has common areas with cable TV, outdoor walking paths and a cafeteria where residents are served three meals a day.
Treatment and Staff
VA Black Hills cannot provide detox on-site but those in need can be referred to the appropriate facility before beginning treatment. While the specifics of each program may vary, the length is 21 or 28 days, the latter of which is the more intensive track. Both include individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based methods such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Groups cover a range of topics including female-specific issues, life skills, couples therapy, relapse prevention and trauma-informed care. Dual diagnosis support and medication management can also be provided. All clients also attend regular 12-step meetings throughout the program as well.
The staff at the VA Black Hills Health Care System consists of MDs, RNs, psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs, LPCs and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.

There are a full continuum of primary healthcare services offered as well as case management and housing placement aid for homeless veterans.
