The Basics
Founded in 1990, Urban Ounce of Prevention Services is a community-oriented non-profit that offers outpatient treatment for addiction and other social services to low-income, inner-city communities in Akron, Ohio. Its various programs and outreach services are funded by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS) and works with both court-ordered and self-referred clients.
Treatment and Staff
Upon intake, clients meet with staff members to determine the treatment protocol would best suit their needs. The New Beginnings Project focuses on adult females with alcohol and drug problems, specializing in women with young children. The program employs individual and group therapy using evidence-based practices like CBT and DBT. Session goals focus on cultivating healthy parent-child relationships and providing trauma-informed care for victims of domestic violence.
The main addiction treatment program for adults is called the Exodus Treatment program, which also includes individual and group therapy using evidence-based practices in addition to extensive case management. Clients attend up to four sessions a week at the intensive level or just a couple times a week at the standard outpatient level. Though not a requirement, men and women are encouraged supplement their treatment by attending outside 12-step meetings.
Staff consists of state-certified drug counselors, Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistants (CDCAs) and case managers.
Extras
Other services offered by Urban Ounce include its Building Dreams Mentoring Program, which offers healthy mentors and role models to children and adolescents. With an emphasis on success in both school and life, the program also hosts educational groups on good decision making and avoiding drugs and alcohol. The New Bridges Program is an after-school track consisting of groups that address character building, decision making, goal setting and other life skills. Both programs include “Developmental Enrichment” activities, such as field trips and community service, aimed to help kids gain a broader scope of the world around and them and encourage them to develop their own interests and passions.
Additional services includes general health education, counseling for victims of domestic violence and on-site childcare for mothers in treatment.

In all, Urban Ounce of Prevention Services offers outpatient addiction treatment to underserved communities in Akron. With a whole-person approach to recovery, its programs emphasize education and developing awareness, self-worth and healthy families and therefore offer additional case management and community-outreach. While not equipped to treat client with more severe co-occurring disorders, Urban Ounce of Prevention Services Inc nevertheless remains a valuable resource for its target demographic.
