Urban Drug Rehab (UDR) is an unusual short-term residential program located on the grounds of Gaia Retreat and Recovery, a rainforest retreat north of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia.
It offers holistic addiction treatment for men and women over the age of 18. Created by Jost Sauer, an author and self-help guru who has been described as a cross between Crocodile Dundee and Tony Little, UDR was a concept inspired by his own struggles with addiction. Sauer doesn’t believe addiction is a medical issue or a disease; he sees it as a perfectly natural urge arising from repeating behavior that enhances your body, mind and spirit. His philosophy is that the motivation to get high is healthy, it’s just the method that is the problem. He feels recovery can be achieved by harnessing chi energy to get high through nutrition, meditation and traditional Chinese medicine.
Accommodations and Food
The serene Gaia Retreat sits on 120 acres of pristine rainforest bordering a national park on the Sunshine Coast hinterland, a region known for its spectacular natural environment. It accommodates UDR clients in private rooms in a timber forest lodge. The well-appointed facility features forest walks, rock pools and communal areas for relaxing.
Organic meals are prepared by a qualified nutritionist and are designed to accelerate recovery. The menu is customized to suit individual tastes and dietary restrictions.
Treatment and Staff
The five-day accelerated drug and alcohol recovery program runs weekly, Monday through Friday. Treatment includes daily motivational recovery seminars, holistic treatments and a course of nutritional supplements. There is no 12-step element or group therapy at UDR, only individual sessions with a variety of holistic practitioners.
A regimen of holistic treatments are provided daily. They include special forms of alternative therapies specifically designed for recovering addicts to help eliminate cravings, create emotional stability and restore health. Treatment includes massage therapy, acupuncture, nutritional counseling, therapeutic exercise, qi-gong, yoga therapy, mindfulness and meditation.
An eclectic group of holistic professionals comprise the treatment team at UDR. They include a yoga teacher, massage therapists, a nutritionist, fitness trainers and a trained naturopath and herbalist. Sauer is also certified in acupuncture and massage therapy.
Extras
Guided hikes, yoga, art therapy and Tai Chi are offered to add variety to the daily schedule.
Sauer is also the creator of an online treatment program called eHAB. In this series of 24 video tutorials, available for around $800, Sauer shares his secrets to avoiding relapse, diet and vitamin supplement information, as well as suggestions for exercise. All rehab clients receive free eHAB as part of the program. This offers ongoing support.
