U of MThe Basics

University of Michigan Addiction Treatment Services is located in the school’s Depression Center and Ambulatory Psychiatry building in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Founded in 1990 as part of a local hospital, U of M treats clients from around the country, offering outpatient services as well as a Suboxone program.

Treatment and Staff

The treatment process at U of M begins with an initial assessment during which counselors determine the appropriate level of care for the client. If the client needs residential treatment or detox, they are referred to outside services.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) runs for eight weeks and consists of group and individual therapy. Clients are required to attend three group meetings a week that last for three hours each. The group meetings are both sharing- and education-based, and usually have 10 to 20 clients. Individual meetings are available if needed. The IOP usually has a two-week waiting period for new clients.

The IOP uses CBT and supports dual diagnosis. The program is not 12-step oriented and does not require involvement in outside AA or NA groups. U of M has a rotating mix of CSWs, licensed therapists and psychologists in the program.

The school has an adolescent outpatient program as well. Its length and intensity varies based on the client’s needs. The program has between eight and 12 clients at a time and is overseen by two of the CSWs. A medical doctor regularly checks in with the clients in the program who have co-occurring disorders.

U of M’s Suboxone program is highly individualized. Counselors determine if the client qualifies for this program during their initial assessment. If they do qualify, the client receives a high level of individualized medication management, with doctors regularly checking in on them. The length of the program depends on the needs of the client.

Extras

Although U of M does not offer an aftercare program, they do refer clients to outside facilities that have continuing treatment programs. Also, Michigan does not have an official family program but the client’s family members can be involved in group and individual meetings if the client wishes.

Summary

U of M’s addiction treatment services are an affordable option for clients who need an IOP program, but are not interested in AA or the 12 steps. The academic setting allows a high level of medical and psychiatric support for clients who may have co-occurring disorders. The family involvement in group meetings may help clients who have supportive family members in the area or for adolescent clients still living at home.
