University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is the premier hospital in the state, offering outpatient substance abuse and mental health treatment. Located in the college town of Iowa City, the hospital was founded in 1873 and moved into its current structure in 1928, which at the time made it one of the largest hospitals in the country.

Treatment and Staff

Although the UI hospital does not offer inpatient rehab, a range of outpatient services are available. Following an initial evaluation, a treatment plan is mapped out for each individual.

The dual diagnosis program offers support for mental health issues, as well as substance abuse. This option meets six hours a day, five days a week. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) meets three times a week, for three hours a day. The Extended Outpatient Program is a scaled down version of the IOP, with a greater focus on relapse prevention.

All of the programs use a combination of individual, group and family counseling. They are led by Dr. Jill Liesveld, an award-winning psychiatrist, so pharmacotherapy (especially in dual diagnosis situations) is available. Her team of social workers, activity therapists and nurse practitioners work from a medical model of therapy. This involves evidence-based CBT as opposed to a 12-step based model, although the AA/NA Big Book methodology is encouraged in some of the peer-oriented group sessions.

Extras

University of Iowa offers the STOP program, a full range of outpatient services in the afternoon for college-age clients. This program is designed to help students cope with the specific issues facing them in college. UI also offers the Professional Program, working with various licensing organizations in the state to provide outpatient services to professionals.

In Summary
