Unity Recovery Center Review
Unity Recovery Center is an alternative to the world of strict, institutional rehabs. Located in coastal Hobe Sound, Florida, about 40 minutes from West Palm Beach, this program offers two different 30-day tracks: adventure and holistic. Depending on the individual’s needs, treatment can mean activities such as kayaking or time to relax through yoga. While the 12 steps are involved, that is not the only source of serenity for clients.
Accommodations and Food
At Unity Recovery Center, residential housing is separate from the clinical building, eliminating the institutional feel that some facilities have. The accommodations are split between the two programs, with 56 beds for the adventure track and 60 for the holistic. Clients are housed in one of three apartment complexes that are laid out in a horseshoe shape, with a swimming pool in the center. Each apartment holds four clients at a time, the large hotel-like bedrooms featuring queen-sized beds and wooden dressers. A modern kitchen, a living room with a TV and marble bathrooms can also be found in each unit.
With palm trees swaying in the breeze and crystal blue skies, clients will definitely want to spend time outdoors. Picnic tables for relaxing and smoking can be found just outside the apartment doors, while the pool offers the perfect place for sunbathing and swimming. Each client receives a membership to an off-site gym, which can be used five times a week in the mornings.
Residents are required to cook their own meals as a way to prepare them for the outside world. Each week, they get a $60 allowance to spend during supervised grocery trips. There is an outside BBQ for communal cooking.
Treatment
When needed, treatment begins with a medically monitored detox during which clients are under the 24-hour care of nurses and medical doctors. This process lasts for five days and costs $3,750. Once the stabilization period is complete, clients can begin their 30-day treatment program, choosing from one of the two tracks.
The adventure track costs $19,500 for 30 days and involves lots of outside activities. Clients who love the outdoors and being active will thrive in this program, with weekly opportunities for rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, equine therapy, fishing and ropes courses. This endorphin-releasing option sets clients up for a new way of living, finding healthy escapes in fitness and adventure.
The holistic track is more subdued and cheaper, costing $15,900 for 30 days. The goal is to restore and rejuvenate, exposing clients to activities like yoga and Tai Chi. By exploring the mind-body connection, clients can learn how to soothe themselves in a positive ways. Through movement and awareness, many negative emotions stored in the body can finally be released.
While the two tracks differ in terms of recreational outlets, they have an identical clinical structure. All residents are under the care of psychiatrists, Master’s-level therapists, counselors and a medical doctor during their stay. Individual sessions with the primary therapist occur once a week, but clients meet their therapist in a small group setting every day for several hours. This allows the therapist to stay up to date with the client’s struggles, as well as providing the client with consistent support. Group therapy is held for several hours each day, focusing on topics such as trauma, codependency, relapse prevention and processing. On-site AA/NA meetings occur on a daily basis, giving clients an opportunity to form good recovery habits. However, the 12 steps are not mandatory.
A family weekend is offered on the third weekend of every month, providing family members with an opportunity to participate in group therapy, individual therapy sessions and educational lectures.
Extras
Each week, clients from both tracks have access to a chiropractor at no additional charge. Massages are also offered but cost $30 out of pocket for each session.
