Mercy Hospital Review
Located in the Minneapolis suburb of Fridley, Minnesota, Mercy Hospital on Unity campus is a part of Allina Health, a non-profit network of hospitals and clinics. This facility offers a medical detox program coupled with a multi-tiered outpatient program. Since 1966, Mercy Hospital’s substance abuse team has been following the 12-step model of treatment to help clients find sobriety.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment begins with a full assessment and referral process. The doctors and counselors work to determine what is the best course for the client’s recovery. If physical stabilization is needed, they are referred to the hospital’s medically supervised detox. The detox process typically lasts five to seven days, with around the clock nursing care. For those needing residential care after detox, Mercy Hospital will provide a referral to a traditional 30-day inpatient rehab.
The seven-week Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers a high level of care, while allowing clients to maintain commitments in their everyday lives. This program operates three hours a day, four days a week—both morning or evening slots are available. Although there are occasional individual sessions with counselors, this is primarily a group therapy program that uses the traditional 12-step model of recovery. Group topics include relapse prevention, coping skills, trauma and 12-step work. Clients are required to attend two off-site AA/NA meetings on their own each week and start working the steps with a sponsor.
The treatment team at Mercy Hospital include a medical director, attending physicians, a behavioral health services director, licensed and board certified alcohol and drug counselors, social workers and registered nurses.
Extras
Once IOP has been completed, clients can step down to the aftercare program. This includes one group session per week, for a total of 10 weeks.
A family program is available each Wednesday evening to educate families and loved ones about chemical dependency and recovery.
