Unity Healing Center Review
Unity Healing Center is a substance abuse treatment program offered by the Indian Health Service, a health service provider to American Indians and Alaska Natives. Unity Healing Center is located on the Cherokee Reservation in Cherokee, North Carolina, where clients have access to numerous other American Indian resources. The Unity Healing Center is a long-term residential treatment program with 16 beds for adolescents aged 13 to 18.
Accommodations and Food
The accommodations for Unity Healing Center are held in the same facility where treatment is offered. Clients of the same age and gender are held in the same rooms, which are double occupancy. The bathrooms are communal and are shared by the same gender. There are recreation areas, living areas, classrooms and counseling rooms as well as a dining room and a fully equipped kitchen. Meals are served three times a day and include only healthy options such as salads, fruit, fish or grains.
Treatment and Staff
The residential program offered by Unity Healing Center is not solely a substance abuse treatment program, but also offers counseling and academic assistance for a variety of other issues. The program is highly individualized and caters to the needs of each client based off of the initial evaluation and assessment. Treatment for all clients includes individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, academic education, substance abuse education, cultural and spiritual programming and integration of the 12 steps. Group sessions are held twice a day when clients are not in class or in substance abuse education. Individual and family sessions are scheduled separately and clients focus on specific issues and goals for their recovery. Treatment for co-occurring disorders is also offered to those clients who need it.
The staff at Unity Healing Center consists of clinicians, a psychologist, LSWs, CADCs and LCDCs.
Extras
Family involvement is strongly encouraged as most clients are quite young. In addition to the CBT-based therapies and the 12 steps, clients are also given the opportunity to engage in adventure therapy through a variety of recreational trips and activities. Unity Healing Center facilitates community education programs, a referral system and cultural and spiritual programming.
