United Indian Health ServicesThe Basics

United Indian Health Services of Arcata, California, offers outpatient care for individuals of Indian descent and their families. Resources include addiction and dual diagnosis treatment as well as psychiatric assessments. The substance abuse programs are mainly aimed toward youth within the community and are driven by evidence-based practices, 12-step principles and traditional Native American approaches.

Treatment and Staff

During the first stage of treatment, clients work with counselors to identify goals and design an individualized treatment plan that is frequently referred back to during their time in treatment. There is no set treatment length, though typically it’s at least 30 days. The cultural elements of the program are usually gender-specific.

Treatment addresses home or relationship issues and incorporates relapse prevention techniques, coping skills and psychoeducation. Group and individual therapy includes CBT, DBT and trauma-informed care. Twelve-step recovery principles are also implemented. Also worth noting, a significant portion of treatment for the younger clients is family involvement with every step of the program. Dual diagnosis support and medication management are available when necessary.

The staff of United Indian Health Services includes traditional Native healers, physicians and LCSWs.

Extras

As previously mentioned, United Indian Health Services combines traditional philosophies with modern treatment methods. Clients can expect a variety of more holistically-oriented therapeutic activities including the culturally-based Sweat Lodge, smudging and talking circles along with play therapy, sand play therapy and art therapy.

For the adolescent clients who are in the juvenile detention system, there are weekly group sessions that take place at the detention center.

There are separate family and couples counseling, medical and dental services offered through this facility for those who qualify.

In Summary

The culturally-sensitive treatments offered at United Indian Health Services provide a comfortable option for clients and loved ones who want to maintain ties to Native American traditions in sobriety. Programming also addresses underlying issues by utilizing modern, evidence-based approaches and dual diagnosis support. This could be a great fit for Native Americans ready for a new chapter in recovery.
