The Basics
Unique Ladies of Character Recovery House is a nonprofit Christian faith-based organization that provides safe, sober housing for women transitioning from drug treatment programs. Located in Tampa, ULOC provides services not only to Tampa residents, but also to the surrounding communities of St. Petersburg, Mango, Lutz and Brandon counties.
Founded by Samantha Brown, a formerly incarcerated recovering addict, the ULOC Sober Living program for women in recovery from substance abuse offers not only housing in any one of their several houses but recovery support and counseling as well.
Accommodations and Amenities
ULOC has sober living environments at several homes in and around Tampa, Florida. The houses, although small, have all of the comforts of home, and are safe and secure. Clients share rooms with twin sized beds and a private cabinet for personal belongings. There are large living rooms with cable televisions and free wifi as well as a fully equipped kitchen.
Rules and Regulations
The various programs offered by ULOC include a Christian-focused 12-step program, AA/Al-Anon, counseling, life skills, anger management, cognitive thinking, and employment and career coaching. These programs are taught, supervised, or counseled by professional teachers, LSWs, or Master’s-level therapists.
Each client is expected to remain responsible for her own recovery, focusing on the individual and her commitment to sobriety and her personal connection with God. She is also expected to participate in job-related tasks such as developing communication skills, computer literacy, completing a resume and job applications.
Extras
ULOC not only offers safe housing and various programs for women transitioning from substance abuse treatment facilities and other circumstances (such as jail, prison, homelessness, and domestic violence) but also has extra events and activities like conferences focusing on women’s issues, special ministries and planned social outings. ULOC has a special program which assists mothers in reclaiming custody of their children.
In Summary
ULOC is not a luxury sober living environment but its commitment to care is evident in its outreach to the often overlooked groups of women trapped in the revolving doors of incarceration and addiction. Although their programs cater best to those already committed to the Christian faith, all women in need are welcome. In any of its houses around Western Florida, ULOC provides shelter, comfort and counseling based on the 12-step methodology of recovery.
