The Basics
Under the Umbrella is an eating disorder outpatient clinic located in Bloomington, Indiana. This facility offers a variety of group therapy options in addition to individual counseling and nutritional education services. Under the Umbrella was founded in 2014 by Christy Duffy, who is a clinical psychologist, to offer her clients struggling with all types of eating disorders and eating related issues a safe and supportive place to receive comprehensive treatment.
Treatment and Staff
Duffy and her team of clinicians approach eating disorders as a multidimensional disease and therefore uses several different treatment methods with the cooperation of outside agencies to fully provide her clients with a complete program. She obtains written consent from her clients to connect them with local dietitians and medical doctors, and tries to address the underlying cause of the eating disorder.
One of the group therapy options at Under the Umbrella is a 10-week education based group that aims to help clients change their thought patterns and behaviors when it comes to food. Clients focus on self care, identifying triggers, how family and other close relationships affect their eating disorder, and discovering their motivation for long-term change. There is also an ongoing recovery group for those who have completed the educational track. This is also available to those who have already attended some sort of eating disorder treatment, whether in an inpatient or outpatient setting. This group focuses on relapse prevention and working on life and coping skills, and includes some take home assignments.
Additional services provided include a body composition analysis, a tool that helps clients understand their bodies and overall health and wellness through motivation. There are also holistic therapy modalities, like art therapy, and a four week series of Yoga for Recovery.
As clients progress through the program and begin to see positive changes take effect, there is an exercise consultation offered. This establishes a healthy goal oriented exercise routine that is overseen by a therapist and dietitian to ensure that the proper nutrients and food intake is being observed. This is only provided once its clear that the client is sufficiently gaining and maintaining their weight and using their coping skills in a healthful way.
The providers at Under the Umbrella are Master’s- and Doctorate-level clinicians who specialize in eating disorders. They are LPC, LMHC, a kinesiologist and psychologist.

The eating disorder program at Under the Umbrella treats each client as a whole person and doesn’t just focus on the eating disorder itself. They employ a variety of scientifically back methods and give each of their clients a personalized treatment plan complete with goals and recovery successes.
