In Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the University of North Carolina School of Medicine’s Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders offers specialized treatment services for adolescents and young adults between the ages of 13 and 25 struggling with eating disorders. The Center for Excellence offers comprehensive inpatient programming that includes a structured environment, around-the-clock medical care, an integrative therapy model and meal support.
Accommodations and Food
The Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders is situated in the UNC Medical Center. While it is a hospital setting, it only sees six clients at a time so individuals receive a lot of attention from medical staff as well as a tight community of peers. A large component of the eating disorder program is meal support. As such, clients eat healthy and substantial meals and snacks.
Treatment and Staff
As many clients with eating disorders have gone undiagnosed for many years, every individual entering the inpatient program must first undergo a comprehensive assessment that includes a detailed family, medical and psychiatric history. Family is encouraged, especially in cases of adolescent clients, to provide as much information as possible. An individualized treatment solution is developed based off of the intake evaluation, and the care plan is designed to target the specific needs of the client. UNC understands there is no such thing as a “one size fits all” approach.
To this end, the Center for Excellence incorporates medical care and medication management into an integrative treatment approach that includes evidence-based, holistic and spiritual models. Clients at UNC engage in daily sessions with a psychiatrist as well as frequent individual, group and family therapy. The facility employs CBT, DBT, ACT and family-based therapy as well as meditation, relaxation training and spirituality groups.
The UNC Center for Excellence team is comprised of psychiatrists, psychologists, physicians, social workers, therapists, dietitians and a nursing team. For clients in need of dual diagnosis support, medication management is available.
As the Center of Excellence is incorporated into the UNC Hospital network, the facility utilizes resources and staff that many other facilities would not have access to.
