The Basics

The University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill offers specialized outpatient treatment through its Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders. The facility treats clients struggling with eating disorders and co-occurring mental health diagnoses. The Center of Excellence’s outpatient care is ideal for clients that need therapy but do not require an inpatient program, or for those persons transitioning back into regular life after completing residential care.

Treatment and Staff

Every client starts with a comprehensive evaluation of their specific needs and goals. The treatment team believes in an individualized approach that seeks to heal the root cause of conditions, rather than simply addressing symptoms. To this end, Center of Excellence integrates a holistic approach that incorporates medication management and medical care with supplementary evidence-based practices like CBT, DBT, ACT and family-based therapy. Clients engage in weekly individual sessions with a psychiatrist and therapist as well as a family therapist. In addition, the program facilitates nutrition counseling with a dietitian.

The Center of Excellence has a multidisciplinary outpatient team made up of psychiatrists, mental health professionals, counselors, therapists, dietitians and psychologists. The facility is linked with the UNC Hospital and UNC Mental Health Specialists’ outpatient services. In addition, the staff collaborates with Research Triangle professionals in Raleigh and Durham. The Center of Excellence can therefore offer resources that other outpatient programs cannot, including medical care and medication management.

Extras

The Center of Excellence offers family sessions like the Maudsley method that are particularly effective for clients with anorexia.

Holistic therapies like relaxation practice and mindfulness meditation are also available.

In Summary

The Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders is situated in the University of North Carolina Medical Center. The facility offers specialized treatment for adolescents and young adults with a range of eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. Medication management and nutrition therapy are integral components of the programming, and are implemented within an individualized approach that employs individual, group and family therapy rooted in evidence-based care. Family-based therapy is also utilized. For clients transitioning out of an inpatient program that require only two sessions a week, the Center of Excellence is an excellent resource.
